The All-Time Favourite: Digha
Digha remains the quintessential weekend destination for Kolkatans, and for good reason. It's accessible, budget-friendly, and offers a lively atmosphere. During the monsoon, the beaches are less crowded, and the turbulent grey sea has a dramatic charm.
The experience is less about sunbathing and more about enjoying the rain-washed promenade, the cool sea spray, and the powerful waves. The town is divided into Old and New Digha, with New Digha offering a calmer and wider beach. Activities like horse rides and exploring the Marine Aquarium can be great options if the rain gets too heavy.
The Quieter Drive-In Beach: Mandarmani
If you seek a bit more tranquility than Digha, Mandarmani is your answer. Famous for its long, motorable beach, it offers a different kind of coastal experience. The four-hour drive from Kolkata makes it a perfect weekend escape. While driving on the beach during high tide in monsoon is not advised, the vast expanse of sand becomes a playground during low tide. The monsoon brings out colonies of red crabs on the shore, a sight unique to this region. Resorts here are plentiful, and many offer stunning sea views right from your room, allowing you to enjoy the stormy seas from a comfortable, dry spot.
The Serene Escape: Tajpur and Shankarpur
Tucked between the more popular Digha and Mandarmani, Tajpur is a virgin beach that has largely escaped heavy commercialisation. Its main draw is the pristine shoreline and the hundreds of red crabs that create a crimson carpet on the sand. Shankarpur, a quiet fishing harbour nearby, offers a similar sense of peace. You can easily cover both in a single trip. These destinations are for those who truly want to disconnect. The monsoon here is about long walks on the empty, windswept beach, watching the fishing boats brave the waves, and enjoying the solitude.
Getting There on a Shoestring
Reaching these coastal towns from Kolkata is incredibly budget-friendly. For Digha, both government and private buses frequently leave from Esplanade, with tickets costing as low as ₹140-₹350. Several trains, like the Tamralipta and Kandari Express, also run from Howrah to Digha, offering a comfortable journey of about 3-4 hours. For Mandarmani and Tajpur, buses are also a cheap option, costing around ₹300-₹500. Many buses go towards Digha, and you can get off at Chunnapura Mor (for Mandarmani) or Balisai (for Tajpur) and take a local auto-rickshaw for the final leg of the journey.
Smart Stays and Local Eats
Accommodation in these areas caters to all budgets. To save money, look for hotels slightly away from the main beachfront. Booking on a weekday instead of a weekend can also dramatically lower prices. Food is another area where you can save. Avoid the fancy hotel restaurants and head to the small, local shacks or eateries. These places serve fresh, delicious, and pocket-friendly seafood. A typical fish thali is both filling and affordable. At the Digha Mohana fish market, you can even buy fresh catch like pomfret, prawns, and crabs at wholesale prices and ask a local shack to cook it for you for a nominal fee.
Monsoon-Specific Travel Tips
Travelling during the monsoon requires a little extra preparation. Pack a reliable raincoat, an umbrella, and waterproof bags for your electronics. Be extremely cautious of high tides, as the sea can be unpredictable; always listen to local advice about venturing into the water. While the grey, overcast sky is beautiful, the main attraction is the raw power of nature. Enjoy the thundering waves from a safe distance, savour a hot cup of tea with some fried fish as it rains outside, and embrace the dramatic, romantic atmosphere that only a coastal monsoon can offer.
