The Old Orbit: ISRO's Legacy
For decades, a career in India’s space sector meant one thing: securing a coveted position at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). As the nation’s sole space agency, ISRO was the primary developer of talent, the main employer, and the sole flag-bearer
of India's cosmic ambitions. It built a formidable workforce responsible for everything from rocket design to satellite operations, culminating in globally acclaimed missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan. This model made India a space power but concentrated expertise within a single government entity. A job at ISRO was—and remains—a prestigious role, but the opportunities were finite, funnelled through highly competitive national exams.
A New Frontier: The Private Sector Boom
The landscape began to shift dramatically following government reforms in 2020, which opened the space sector to private enterprise. This policy pivot created a fertile ground for startups. Today, India has over 400 private space-tech companies. Firms like Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, and Dhruva Space are now key players, building everything from launch vehicles to satellite constellations. This has injected dynamism and capital into the ecosystem, with private investment surging significantly. The goal is to grow India's share of the global space economy from around 2% to 8% by 2033, transforming the sector into a $44 billion industry. This rapid expansion has created an urgent demand for skilled professionals, fundamentally altering the space job market.
How The Workforce Is Being Shared
The new ecosystem isn't a zero-sum game of public versus private. Instead, a clear division of labour is emerging. ISRO is increasingly focusing on its core strengths: advanced research, deep-space exploration, national security missions, and developing frontier technologies like human spaceflight for the Gaganyaan programme. It is transitioning from being the manufacturer of everything to becoming a customer and a guiding force. Routine activities, like the manufacturing of established launch vehicles like the PSLV and operational satellites, are gradually being outsourced to private companies and public-sector undertakings. This allows private firms to focus on commercial applications, such as building satellite constellations for earth observation, providing launch services for a global clientele, and innovating in downstream data analytics services. This symbiotic relationship is designed to expand India's overall capacity, not diminish ISRO's role.
The Skills Now In Demand
The demand for talent extends far beyond traditional aerospace engineering. While expertise in propulsion, aerodynamics, and orbital mechanics remains crucial, private firms are aggressively hiring for a diverse set of skills. Aerospace software engineers with proficiency in C++ and Python are needed for flight control and mission planning. Data scientists and GIS analysts are in high demand to interpret the terabytes of data sent back by Earth-observation satellites for applications in agriculture, climate monitoring, and urban planning. Other sought-after roles include specialists in electronics, robotics, embedded systems, and materials science. The boom is even creating jobs in non-technical fields like space law, policy, and business development. This diversification of roles is making the space sector accessible to a wider pool of talent than ever before.
Bridging The Two Worlds
Facilitating this public-private partnership is the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), established as a single-window agency to support and regulate private space activities. IN-SPACe helps private companies access ISRO's state-of-the-art facilities, facilitates technology transfers, and authorises their missions. This structured collaboration has created a talent-sharing dynamic. Experienced scientists have moved from ISRO to lead private ventures, bringing invaluable expertise. While this has raised concerns about a 'brain drain' from the national agency, many experts see it as a healthy sign of a maturing ecosystem, where skills are being distributed to fuel overall industry growth. This circulation of talent ensures that both public and private entities can leverage a growing pool of experienced professionals.
