The Challenge of On-the-Go Complaints
For decades, lodging a complaint during a train journey has often felt like sending a message into the void. Passengers facing issues like a malfunctioning air conditioner, unclean toilets, or poor food quality have had to navigate complaint books, helpline
numbers, or social media platforms. While the Rail Madad portal has streamlined the process to an extent, the resolution time could still be frustratingly long, with solutions often coming well after the journey has ended. This delay meant that the immediate discomfort or problem remained unaddressed, leading to a poor travel experience. The new system is designed to tackle this specific pain point: the gap between complaint and resolution during the journey itself.
Introducing 'Project Tez Samadhan'
In response to this challenge, the Ministry of Railways has rolled out a new initiative named 'Project Tez Samadhan', which translates to 'Fast Resolution'. The project’s primary goal is to create a closed-loop, real-time system that addresses passenger grievances almost as soon as they are reported. Instead of a complaint languishing in a queue, the new model ensures it is immediately directed to an official on the train who is empowered to find a solution. The target is ambitious: to resolve a majority of onboard complaints within two hours of being filed, ensuring that passengers see tangible results before their journey is over. This marks a significant shift from a passive logging system to an active, on-the-spot resolution framework.
Which Trains Are Part of the Pilot?
This initial phase of Project Tez Samadhan is being tested on five of India’s most prominent and high-demand train routes. The selection covers a mix of premium and intercity services, allowing the Railways to gather data across different travel formats. The five trains included in the pilot program are: 1. Rajdhani Express (New Delhi - Mumbai route) 2. Shatabdi Express (New Delhi - Bhopal route) 3. Duronto Express (Mumbai - Kolkata route) 4. Tejas Express (Lucknow - New Delhi route) 5. Vande Bharat Express (New Delhi - Varanasi route) Passengers traveling on these specific services will be the first to experience the new, accelerated complaint resolution process. The success of this pilot will determine its future expansion.
How the New System Works
The new process is designed for simplicity and speed. Passengers on these five trains can now find QR codes placed strategically inside their coaches. Scanning the QR code with a smartphone directs them to a simplified interface of the Rail Madad portal, where they can log their complaint instantly. Once submitted, the system triggers an immediate alert to a dedicated Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO) present on the train. This GRO is the crucial new link in the chain, tasked with coordinating directly with the relevant onboard staff — whether from housekeeping, the pantry car, the electrical team, or the Railway Protection Force. This dedicated officer is responsible for ensuring the problem is looked into and resolved swiftly. The entire process is monitored in real-time on a central dashboard accessible to senior divisional railway managers, adding a layer of accountability.
What This Means for Passengers
For travelers on these routes, this initiative promises a more responsive and accountable railway experience. Common grievances like non-functional charging points, issues with seat cleanliness, delays in meal service, or disruptive co-passengers can now theoretically be addressed in the moment. The presence of a dedicated GRO means there is a single point of contact on the train who is answerable for solving the problem. It eliminates the uncertainty of whether a complaint filed online or in a physical book will ever be seen by the right person in time. It empowers the passenger with a tool that provides immediate recourse, shifting the focus from post-journey feedback to in-journey solutions. If you are traveling on one of these five trains, look for the QR codes and test the system if the need arises.
