From Labour Arbitrage to AI Leverage
For decades, the Indian IT industry's success was built on a simple formula: a large, skilled, English-speaking workforce delivering software and back-office services at a competitive price. This labour-intensive model turned firms like TCS, Infosys,
and Wipro into global powerhouses. The emergence of powerful generative AI, capable of writing code, debugging systems, and automating routine tasks, directly challenges this foundation. The old model of adding more engineers to grow revenue is weakening. However, rather than signaling an end, this has triggered a strategic pivot. Companies are shifting from selling hours of human labour to delivering AI-powered solutions, focusing on higher-value services like AI implementation, data analytics, and digital transformation consulting.
The Great Reskilling Revolution
The single biggest adaptation strategy is a massive, industry-wide push for reskilling. The message from industry leaders is clear: reskill or risk redundancy. Recognizing that AI will be a collaborator in the workplace, not just a tool, IT majors have launched huge internal training programs. TCS has already reskilled over 300,000 employees in foundational AI and Generative AI skills. Wipro has committed to providing digital and AI skills to 1 million students by 2030, alongside its internal upskilling efforts. Similarly, Infosys, through platforms like its Springboard and large-scale deployment of tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot, is focused on creating an AI-ready workforce. This isn't just about learning to use new software; it's about fundamentally changing how work is done, moving employees from routine tasks to roles that require critical thinking, creativity, and strategic oversight of AI systems.
New Job Roles Emerge from the Shift
While AI is automating certain entry-level tasks, it is also creating a host of new, specialized roles that are in high demand. The focus has moved from volume hiring of fresh graduates to targeted recruitment of specialists. Positions such as AI/ML engineers, AI model trainers, prompt engineers, AI governance specialists, and cloud architects are now commanding salary premiums of 20-35% over traditional IT roles. A recent report highlighted that job postings seeking AI skills in India more than doubled in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. This demand is spreading beyond pure tech roles into functions like marketing and design, indicating AI's integration into all facets of business. The narrative is shifting from job loss to job transformation, with some analyses suggesting AI is creating more roles than it is eliminating.
Challenges on the Road to Adaptation
The transition is not without its hurdles. The sheer scale of reskilling a workforce of several million is a monumental task. Hiring at the entry-level has slowed, putting pressure on the millions of engineering graduates India produces each year. Companies must also manage the financial pressure of investing heavily in AI and training while clients are still recalibrating their IT spending. Furthermore, there is a growing need to develop AI solutions tailored to India's unique needs, such as those that work with local languages and can operate on lower-cost devices. Success will depend on navigating these challenges while staying ahead in the global innovation race.
