The journey between India's tech hub, Bengaluru, and its financial capital, Mumbai, is set to be transformed. Indian Railways has introduced a Vande Bharat Sleeper service, promising to slash travel time and enhance overnight comfort.
A New Era of Overnight Travel
Indian Railways has
launched the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Express connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai, a significant upgrade for one of the country's busiest travel corridors. The inaugural special (Train No. 06503) departed from SMVT Bengaluru on November 1, 2026. Regular services are scheduled to begin from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3. This new service, operated by the South Western Railway, is the second Vande Bharat Sleeper in the country and the first for southern India, marking a major step in modernising long-distance rail travel. It aims to provide a faster, more comfortable alternative to existing trains, which can take over 22 hours to cover the same distance. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed to complete the journey in approximately 16 hours.
The Journey Deconstructed
The train (Nos. 27651/27652) will run six days a week, originating from SMVT Bengaluru and terminating at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. Departing from Bengaluru in the evening, it is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai before noon the next day, making it a convenient overnight option. The route passes through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, with eight official stops: Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, and Kalyan. The inclusion of a stop at Yadgir came after requests from passenger forums to improve connectivity for the region. By significantly reducing the journey time by about 7 to 8 hours compared to the fastest existing trains like the Udyan Express, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is now the quickest rail link between the two metropolises.
Onboard Experience and Amenities
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset, manufactured by BEML, is designed for passenger comfort and speed, with a potential to run at 160 km/h. The 16-coach train can accommodate 823 passengers across three classes: AC First Class, AC 2nd tier, and AC 3rd tier. The interiors feature ergonomically designed, better-cushioned berths, ambient lighting, and individual reading lights. For modern travelers, each berth is equipped with charging points, including USB ports. The coaches have automatic doors, sealed gangways for reduced noise and jerk-free rides, and bio-vacuum toilets with touch-free fittings to enhance hygiene. Passengers in First AC will have the exclusive facility of hot-water showers. Safety is a key focus, with the train equipped with the Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV cameras, and advanced fire detection and suppression systems.
Booking,
Fares,

Schedule
Tickets for the new service can be booked through the IRCTC website, mobile apps, or at railway station reservation counters. Fares are structured by class: an AC 3rd Tier ticket from Bengaluru to Mumbai costs approximately ₹2,810, AC 2nd Tier is priced at ₹3,630,
and AC First Class is around ₹4,450. These fares are about $15$-$20$% higher than those for Rajdhani Express trains. The regular schedule will see Train No. $27652$ departing SMVT Bengaluru at $7$:$45$ PM (except on Mondays) and arriving at CSMT Mumbai at $11$:$55$ AM the next day. The return journey,
Train No.$27651$, will leave CSMT Mumbai at $8$:$10$ PM (except on Tuesdays) and reach SMVT Bengaluru at $12$:$00$ PM the following day. Unlike other trains,
the Vande Bharat Sleeper has no provision for Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) tickets.
