A New Frontier Opens on the Ground
India's space story has undergone a seismic shift. Historically, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was the sole custodian of the nation's celestial ambitions. But landmark policy reforms, culminating in the Indian Space Policy of 2023, have
thrown open the doors to the private sector. This wasn't just about allowing private companies to participate; it was an invitation to build, launch, and operate independently. To guide this new era, the government established the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in 2020. Functioning as a single-window agency, IN-SPACe is tasked with authorising, promoting, and supervising all private space activities, effectively acting as a bridge between private enterprise and ISRO's vast infrastructure and expertise. This has catalysed a boom, with the number of space startups soaring from just a handful a few years ago to over 450 today.
The Rocket Builders Reach for Orbit
At the heart of this new ecosystem are companies building the vehicles to get to space. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace made headlines in July 2026 with the successful launch of Vikram-1, India's first privately developed orbital rocket. This milestone, achieved on the first attempt, placed India in an elite club with the US and China as nations with private orbital launch capability. Another key player, Agnikul Cosmos, is also making waves with its Agnibaan rocket, which features the world's first single-piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine. These companies are not just replicating existing technology; they are innovating to bring down the cost of access to space, a critical factor for the commercial satellite market. Their success proves that Indian startups can handle one of the most complex technological challenges: building reliable and cost-effective launch vehicles.
Eyes in the Sky: A Universe of Data
While launch grabs headlines, much of the economic potential lies in what happens in orbit. Here, too, Indian startups are excelling. Pixxel is building a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites. Unlike standard satellites that see in a few colours, hyperspectral imagers capture data across hundreds of wavelengths, providing incredibly detailed information with applications in agriculture, climate monitoring, and resource management. Meanwhile, companies like Dhruva Space are developing full-stack solutions, building satellite platforms and ground station services for a global clientele. This demonstrates a maturing ecosystem where companies specialise and collaborate. A recent public-private partnership saw a consortium led by Pixxel, including Dhruva Space, selected to build a national Earth observation constellation, underscoring the government's trust in private capabilities.
A Symbiotic Partnership, Not a Rivalry
The rise of private players is not sidelining ISRO but rather refocusing its mission. The new policy framework positions ISRO to concentrate on research and development, scientific missions, and deep space exploration, leaving more routine operations to the private sector. This creates a powerful synergy. ISRO actively facilitates the growth of startups by transferring technology, sharing its world-class testing facilities, and providing mentorship. Many of these new companies are founded by former ISRO scientists, creating a valuable transfer of expertise that strengthens the entire domestic industry. This collaborative approach is accelerating the pace of innovation, allowing India to pursue both ambitious government missions and a vibrant commercial market simultaneously.
