A Third Vande Bharat is Confirmed
Indian Railways has given the green light for a third Vande Bharat Express to operate between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. The decision, confirmed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in mid-August 2026, comes in response to immense public demand and the near-full
occupancy of the existing services. At present, two Vande Bharat trains already run daily services connecting the two major cities of Jammu and Kashmir. The introduction of a third train aims to increase capacity and provide more travel options on this crucial route. The new service will operate under train numbers 26407 and 26408. While an official launch date is yet to be announced, the approval marks a significant step forward in strengthening the region's rail network.
The Route: What's New?
The new train will run on the same breathtaking Jammu-Srinagar line as its predecessors, a route made possible by the landmark Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. The key update for this third service is the formal inclusion of a stop at Udhampur's Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan station, a move made in response to requests from the local population. The existing route for the Vande Bharat trains covers the 269-kilometre distance in approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes, a stark contrast to the lengthy and often unpredictable road journey. Other important stops on the line include Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, connecting major pilgrimage sites, towns, and tourist gateways along the way.
Onboard Experience and Special Features
Passengers on the Kashmir Vande Bharat trains can expect a premium travel experience. The rakes are specially designed to handle the region's challenging climate. Features include heating systems to withstand temperatures as low as -20°C and anti-freezing technology for water pipes and bio-toilets. Like all Vande Bharat trains, these offer aircraft-style seating, automatic doors, Wi-Fi connectivity, and GPS-based passenger information systems. The journey itself is a major attraction, taking passengers across the iconic Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, which offers spectacular views of the valley. The existing trains on this route have been so popular that their coach count was increased from 16 to 20 to accommodate more travellers.
Fare and Booking Information
While the official fare structure for the new third train has not been released, we can look at the pricing for the current Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat services for a reliable estimate. For the existing trains, a ticket in the AC Chair Car (CC) class typically costs between ₹715 and ₹880. For those seeking extra comfort, the Executive Chair Car (EC) fares range from approximately ₹1,320 to ₹1,515. These prices are inclusive of catering charges. It is expected that the new service will follow a similar pricing model. Once the launch is announced, passengers will be able to book their tickets through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile application. Given the high demand, it is always advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
The Bigger Picture: All-Weather Connectivity
This new train is more than just an additional service; it's a reinforcement of the USBRL project's core mission: to provide reliable, all-weather connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. For decades, the region has been heavily reliant on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is prone to closures from landslides and heavy snowfall, often isolating the valley. The railway line, with its series of advanced tunnels and bridges, bypasses these challenges, ensuring that the movement of people and goods can continue year-round. This stability is a game-changer for tourism, local businesses, and the daily lives of residents, ensuring consistent access to markets, education, and healthcare. The success of the first two Vande Bharat trains and the approval of a third underscores the transformative impact of this monumental engineering project.
