immerses school students, typically after class nine, in the world of space science. Participants get hands-on experience, interact with senior scientists, assemble DIY kits like the Chandrayaan-3 lander, and even witness rocket launches. The 2026 edition of YUVIKA saw over a lakh registrations for just a few hundred spots, showing the immense interest among young Indians. Beyond YUVIKA, ISRO engages students through its 'Space on Wheels' bus exhibitions, workshops, and online courses available on its STEM portal, making the wonders of space accessible to many.
The Academic Launchpad: Higher Education
For those ready to take the next step, a strong academic foundation is key. The premier institution for aspiring space scientists is the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram, established by ISRO itself. Admission to its undergraduate and dual-degree programs in Aerospace Engineering and Electronics is highly competitive, based on performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced. A key attraction of IIST is its direct link to the national space agency; graduates who meet the criteria may be recruited as scientists and engineers at ISRO. Beyond IIST, prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Bombay, Madras, and Kharagpur, along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, offer world-class aerospace engineering programs that serve as a gateway to the sector.
A New Frontier: The Private Space Rush
The most significant recent development is the rise of a vibrant private space industry, actively encouraged by government policy. The establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in 2020 was a game-changer. It acts as a single-window agency to facilitate private companies' participation in space activities. This has led to an explosion of startups carving out niches in everything from launch vehicles to satellite manufacturing. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace, which became India's first space-tech unicorn in 2026, and Agnikul Cosmos are building rockets to launch small satellites. Others like Pixxel are developing constellations of Earth-observation satellites, while Dhruva Space offers full-stack satellite solutions.
Where Students Fit In the New Ecosystem
This new ecosystem offers more diverse career paths than ever before. While ISRO remains a prime employer, students now have the option to join dynamic startups that are pushing the boundaries of innovation. These private companies are creating jobs in design, manufacturing, data analytics, and mission operations. Many of these startups, being new and agile, offer internship opportunities for bright engineering students, providing invaluable hands-on experience that was once the exclusive domain of government institutions. Furthermore, some companies are directly involved in education. For example, Chennai-based Space Zone India not only builds rockets but also provides hands-on training for school and college students, recently involving over 6,000 students in a reusable rocket mission in August 2024.
