The most famous journey is the entire 46-kilometre, nearly five-hour trip from Mettupalayam up to Ooty. This route includes the unique rack and pinion system on its steepest sections, a true engineering marvel. However, for budget travellers, this is also the most expensive and in-demand segment. A fantastic and much cheaper alternative is to travel on a shorter leg of the journey. The section between Coonoor (ONR) and Ooty (UAM) is incredibly scenic, takes just over an hour, and has more frequent services and better ticket availability. By opting for this shorter ride, you still get the classic toy train experience—winding through tea estates and tunnels—but at a significantly lower cost and with less booking stress. As of early 2026, the second-class fare for Coonoor to Ooty was around ₹160, making it an excellent budget option.
Travel During the Off-Season
Ooty is a year-round destination, but it has distinct peak seasons from April to June and again from September to November. During these months, not only are train tickets harder to get, but prices for accommodation, food, and local transport in Ooty and Coonoor skyrocket. To keep your trip affordable, consider travelling during the shoulder months or even the monsoon season (July-August). While you might encounter rain, the landscape is incredibly lush and green, and the crowds are thinner. Fewer tourists mean less demand, which translates to better deals on hotels and a higher chance of snagging those elusive train tickets without the peak season rush. Planning your visit outside of major holidays and long weekends will always result in significant savings.

Once you arrive in Ooty or Coonoor, avoid the expensive taxis that wait outside the railway station. Both towns are relatively compact, and many attractions are within walking distance of each other.
