A Note on Monsoon Care
Before we dive into our list, a quick word on caring for indoor plants during damp seasons is essential. High humidity in the air means soil dries out much more slowly. Overwatering is the biggest risk, leading to root rot. Always check the soil before
watering; if the top inch or two feels moist, wait a few more days. Ensure your pots have good drainage holes and avoid letting them sit in trays of water. Good air circulation is also key, so try not to crowd your plants together.
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
The Peace Lily is an elegant choice, known for its glossy dark leaves and stunning white spathes that look like flowers. Native to tropical rainforests, it is perfectly adapted to thrive in high-humidity environments. This makes it an ideal plant for Indian homes during the monsoon. Peace Lilies are also excellent communicators; they will dramatically droop when thirsty, taking the guesswork out of watering. They are quite happy in low-to-medium indirect light, making them suitable for spots away from a direct window. Beyond their beauty, they are also known for helping to purify indoor air.
Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
Often called indestructible, the Snake Plant is a champion for beginner and busy plant parents alike. Its tall, architectural leaves add a modern touch to any room. While it is famously drought-tolerant, it also adapts remarkably well to the high humidity found in bathrooms or during rainy seasons. The key is that it requires very little watering, especially in damp weather, making it low-maintenance. Snake Plants are also tolerant of low light conditions and are celebrated for their air-purifying qualities, even earning a nod from NASA for filtering toxins.
Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)
If you want to create a lush, jungle-like feel, the Boston Fern is your go-to plant. Ferns in general love humidity, and the Boston Fern is particularly good at absorbing moisture from the air. Its feathery, arching fronds can turn a damp corner into a vibrant green spectacle. These plants are native to humid, shaded environments like woodlands, so they are perfectly suited for bathrooms or other rooms with indirect light. If their leaves start to look less than perky, it's often a sign that the air is too dry, but during a damp season, they will be in their element.
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
The Golden Pothos, or Money Plant as it's widely known in India, is one of the most forgiving and versatile houseplants. Its trailing, heart-shaped leaves can be trained to climb or left to cascade from a high shelf or hanging basket. Pothos is highly adaptable and thrives in a range of light conditions, although it prefers indirect light. It loves humidity, which encourages larger, more lush growth. This hardy plant is also easy to propagate, so you can share cuttings with friends and family. Its resilience and beauty make it a staple in many Indian households.
ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
The ZZ Plant is another superstar of the low-maintenance world, perfect for those who might forget they even have plants. With its wide, glossy, dark green leaves, it brings a touch of sculptural elegance to any space. The ZZ Plant is exceptionally tolerant of low light and infrequent watering, thanks to its rhizomes which store water. While it can withstand dry conditions, it also performs well in the higher humidity of a bathroom or a monsoon climate, as long as its soil is not waterlogged. It is the perfect choice for a dim corner that needs a splash of life.
Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)
A long-time favourite in Indian homes, the Chinese Evergreen is prized for its beautifully patterned leaves and its easy-going nature. This plant is wonderfully adaptable, tolerating both low light and the fluctuating humidity common in our climate. There are many varieties, offering a range of colours from deep green to silver and pink. They prefer their soil to be kept consistently moist but not soggy, and they appreciate the humid air that comes with damp weather. Their resilience and striking foliage make them a reliable and attractive indoor option.
