More Than Just a Hot Day
Heat stress occurs when a cow's body generates and absorbs more heat than it can dissipate, especially when high temperatures combine with high humidity. For high-yielding dairy cows, like many of the crossbred varieties in India, this is a serious problem.
Their superior milk production also means higher metabolic rates, which generate more internal body heat, making them particularly vulnerable. Scientists use the Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) to measure the level of stress; once the THI crosses a certain threshold, a cow’s ability to cope diminishes rapidly, setting off a cascade of physiological problems.
The Obvious Impact: Less Milk
The most immediate and visible consequence of heat stress is a drop in milk production. When a cow is too hot, its natural response is to eat less. This reduction in feed intake can be significant, directly limiting the energy and nutrients available for milk synthesis. The animal's body also diverts precious energy toward cooling mechanisms like panting and sweating, further reducing the resources available for production. Studies and farmer reports from across India show that milk yields can fall by as much as 20-30% during periods of extreme heat, a devastating blow to the livelihoods of over 80 million Indian farmers who depend on dairy.
The Hidden Problem: Lower Quality
What researchers are increasingly focusing on, however, is the less visible but equally damaging impact of heat stress on milk quality. The problem isn't just less milk; it's a change in the very composition of the milk itself. Studies show that milk from heat-stressed cows often has lower concentrations of fat and protein. Since farmers are typically paid based on the fat and solid content of their milk, this decline in quality directly translates to lower income, even if the volume reduction isn't as severe. This 'diluted' milk poses a dual threat: it reduces farmer revenue and diminishes the nutritional value of a key dietary staple.
India's Unique Vulnerability
The challenge of heat stress is particularly acute in India. The country's dairy sector is dominated by smallholder farmers with just a few animals each, who often lack the resources for expensive cooling infrastructure like fans and sprinkler systems. Furthermore, buffaloes, which contribute nearly half of India's total milk production, are even more susceptible to heat stress than cows because they have fewer sweat glands and rely on wallowing in water to cool down. As heatwaves become more frequent and intense due to climate change, this vulnerability is becoming a major concern for the nation's food security and economic stability, with losses already estimated in the thousands of crores annually.
The Search for Solutions
In response, researchers across India, including at institutions like the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), are working on a multi-pronged approach. One major area of focus is genetics. Scientists have successfully developed and registered heat-resilient cattle breeds designed to maintain productivity even in hotter conditions. Other research is exploring nutritional interventions, such as specialized feeds and supplements that can help animals cope with heat and maintain their appetite. Alongside this, there is a push for improved farm management practices, including designing low-cost, effective shading and ventilation systems that are accessible to small-scale farmers.
