The Mid-August Weather Outlook
As many plan for a three-day break around August 15th, the IMD forecasts active monsoon conditions across large parts of India. While an overall forecast suggested below-normal rainfall for August as a whole, current weather systems have triggered intense,
isolated spells in several regions. Active monsoon troughs and cyclonic circulations are expected to bring widespread rain to North, East, Central, and South India through the coming week. Travellers should anticipate wet conditions, particularly in coastal and mountainous areas, which are popular monsoon destinations.
Regions Under Heavy Rainfall Alerts
The IMD has issued specific warnings for several states. Kerala and Karnataka are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with orange and yellow alerts in effect for multiple districts. In Kerala, districts like Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Kannur are on alert for very heavy rain. Similarly, coastal and interior Karnataka will see widespread rain. In the north, Uttarakhand is forecast to experience intense rainfall, while states like Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh will also see widespread wet weather. Eastern and northeastern states, including Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya, are also on watch for heavy spells. In the west, Konkan and Goa could receive very heavy rainfall. These conditions increase the risk of waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Advice for Air and Road Travellers
For those flying, the primary advice is to expect delays. Airlines and airports are preparing for disruptions, and passengers should monitor their flight status closely. Checking in online can save time at the airport. It is also wise to pack essentials like medications, a change of clothes, and a power bank in your carry-on luggage in case of extended delays. For road trips, especially to hill stations like those in Uttarakhand, Himachal, or the Western Ghats, caution is paramount. Heavy rain can cause landslides and block roads. Before starting your journey, check local traffic advisories and road conditions. Avoid driving through waterlogged streets, and if travelling in hilly terrain, be aware of the risks and have buffer time built into your itinerary.
Essential Packing for a Monsoon Trip
A little preparation can make a big difference when travelling during the monsoon. A lightweight, waterproof jacket and an umbrella are non-negotiable. Choose footwear with good grip that can handle wet and slippery surfaces. To protect your electronics, carry them in waterproof bags or use zip-lock pouches. A power bank is crucial, as power cuts can be more frequent during heavy rains. Also, pack a basic first-aid kit with antiseptic wipes, bandages, and any personal medications. Finally, keep a list of emergency contacts, including your hotel and local authorities, handy.
Considering a Plan B
Given the weather warnings, it might be prudent to have a backup plan. If your destination is under a heavy or very heavy rainfall alert, assess whether the travel is essential. Check the cancellation and rescheduling policies for your flights and hotels. Some travellers might prefer destinations in rain-shadow regions, which receive less rainfall. However, for many popular monsoon spots like Goa, Coorg, or Munnar, the rain is part of the appeal, creating lush green landscapes and full waterfalls. The key is to embrace the season's character while prioritizing safety, packing appropriately, and staying flexible.
