Confirm Route, Timings, and Train Number
The first step is to get the basics right. The initial services, which began in June 2025, connected Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) with Srinagar (SINA). As of April 30, 2026, these services were extended to Jammu Tawi (JAT), establishing a direct
link between Jammu and Srinagar. Currently, two pairs of trains (26401/26402 and 26403/26404) operate on this route. For example, train number 26401 departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar around 11:10 AM, covering the distance in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. The return train, 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and arrives in Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. Services generally run six days a week, often with no service on Tuesdays. Always double-check the latest schedule on the official IRCTC website, as timings can be subject to seasonal changes.
A Third Train and New Stoppage at Udhampur
Due to high demand, a third Vande Bharat service between Jammu and Srinagar has been approved as of August 2026. This new service (train numbers 26407/26408) will include a stop at Udhampur, officially known as Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station. This is a significant addition for travellers heading to or from Udhampur. While the existing trains halt at stations like Katra and Banihal, the inclusion of Udhampur on the new service provides more flexibility. If Udhampur is your destination, keep an eye out for the launch announcement and timetable for this specific train.
Verify Fare and Class Options
The Vande Bharat Express offers two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). As of August 2026, fares for the AC Chair Car on the Jammu-Srinagar route range from approximately ₹715 to ₹880. The Executive Chair Car, which offers more spacious seating and premium services, costs between ₹1,320 and ₹1,515. These fares are inclusive of catering services, but it's wise to confirm the exact amount at the time of booking, as prices can vary slightly. Booking is available through the official IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app. Given the popularity of this route, it is advisable to book your tickets well in advance.
Understand the All-Weather Features
This isn't just any train; it's an engineering marvel designed for the challenging Himalayan terrain. The Vande Bharat rakes on this route are specially winter-proofed to operate in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. Key features include heated windshields for the driver's cabin to ensure visibility during fog or snowfall and self-regulating heating cables to prevent water pipelines from freezing. This all-weather capability provides a reliable alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is often prone to closures. While the train is built for reliability, it is still prudent to keep an eye on extreme weather advisories closer to your travel date.
Prepare for a Scenic Journey
The journey is a destination in itself. The route is part of the landmark Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which features numerous tunnels and bridges. The highlight is crossing the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, which stands 359 meters above the riverbed. Recent trial runs in August 2026 saw the Vande Bharat clocking speeds close to 100 kmph on this section, promising reduced travel times. Ensure you have a window seat to soak in the breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys as the train makes its way into Kashmir. The large windows and 180-degree rotating seats in Executive Class are designed to enhance this scenic experience.
