Why Humidity Is a Double-Edged Sword
While tropical plants enjoy humidity, the persistent dampness of the Indian monsoon season is different. High humidity in the air slows down transpiration, the process where plants release water vapour from their leaves. This means the soil stays wet
for much longer than usual. This constant moisture, combined with reduced sunlight from cloudy skies and poor air circulation indoors, creates an ideal breeding ground for fungal diseases and suffocates the plant's roots, leading to the dreaded root rot. Yellowing leaves, a musty smell from the soil, and stunted growth are all warning signs that the humidity is taking its toll.
Rethink Your Watering Schedule
The single biggest mistake plant parents make during the monsoon is overwatering. Your summer watering routine will be far too aggressive for the rainy season. The rule is simple: do not water on a fixed schedule. Instead, always check the soil first. The most reliable method is the finger test; insert your finger about two inches into the soil. If it feels moist, wait another day or two before watering. When you do water, aim for the morning so that any excess moisture has a chance to evaporate during the day. Ensure you water the soil directly and avoid wetting the leaves, as damp foliage encourages fungal infections.
Improve Drainage and Airflow
Good drainage is non-negotiable during the monsoon. Ensure every pot has drainage holes. If you use decorative cachepots without holes, always empty the collected water from the saucer or outer pot after watering. Allowing a plant to sit in stagnant water is a direct invitation for root rot. Elevating your pots on stands or even simple bricks can dramatically improve airflow around the base and prevent waterlogging. Spacing your plants out to avoid overcrowding also helps, as tightly packed plants trap moisture. If your space feels particularly stuffy, using a small fan on a low setting for a few hours a day can work wonders for air circulation.
Watch for Fungal Diseases and Pests
High humidity is a green flag for fungal issues like powdery mildew (a white, fuzzy coating) and leaf spot diseases. These often start when dead leaves and flowers are left on the plant, as they hold moisture and begin to decay. Make it a habit to regularly prune any yellowing or dead leaves and remove debris from the topsoil. Pests like fungus gnats, mealybugs, and aphids also thrive in damp conditions. Fungus gnats, in particular, lay eggs in consistently moist topsoil. A preventative spray of neem oil solution every 10-15 days can help keep many of these problems at bay. If you spot a heavily infected plant, isolate it immediately to prevent the issue from spreading to its neighbours.
Dealing with Root Rot
If you suspect root rot—often indicated by yellowing leaves, wilting even when the soil is wet, and a foul smell—you must act fast. Gently remove the plant from its pot and inspect the roots. Healthy roots are typically firm and white or light-coloured, while rotten roots will be brown or black, soft, and mushy. Using sterilised scissors, trim away all the affected, mushy roots. You can rinse the healthy remaining roots in a diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide and water to kill lingering fungal spores before repotting the plant in fresh, well-draining soil. After this rescue operation, water the plant sparingly until it shows signs of recovery.
Adjust Light and Feeding
Overcast monsoon days mean less sunlight, which slows down photosynthesis and overall growth. To compensate, move your plants closer to windows where they can catch as much indirect light as possible. Since plant growth naturally slows down during this time, you should also reduce or even pause your fertilising routine. Adding fertiliser to already stressed, waterlogged soil can lead to 'fertiliser burn' on the roots, causing more harm than good. A light feeding with vermicompost or a diluted liquid fertiliser can be done during a dry spell, but avoid heavy chemical fertilisers until the season changes.
