This has unleashed a torrent of entrepreneurial energy. The number of space startups has skyrocketed from just one in 2014 to over 450 in 2026. This policy shift isn't just about letting private firms join the game; it's about creating a new ecosystem where ISRO focuses on advanced research and development while private players handle commercial operations, from building satellites to launching them. This public-private partnership is designed to make India a global space hub, with projections showing the national space economy could grow from its current value of about $8.4 billion to $44 billion by 2033.
Cheaper Launches, Bigger Business
The most immediate business impact of this privatisation push is the radical reduction in the cost and complexity of reaching space. Companies like Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace and Chennai's Agnikul Cosmos are at the forefront of this change. In a historic achievement in July 2026, Skyroot's Vikram-1 became India's first privately developed orbital rocket, successfully deploying customer payloads and making India the third country with private launch capability. These companies are leveraging cutting-edge technologies like all-carbon composite structures and 3D-printed engines to build launch vehicles faster and cheaper. Agnikul, for instance, can now 3D print an entire engine in a matter of days. This democratisation of space access means that launching a small satellite is no longer a multi-year, prohibitively expensive endeavour. It opens the door for countless new business models, from satellite-based communication services to in-orbit manufacturing, that were previously unfeasible.
Data From Above, Insights on the Ground
Beyond launch vehicles, the private sector is driving a data revolution. Startups like Pixxel are deploying constellations of advanced Earth-observation satellites. Pixxel's hyperspectral imaging satellites can see the world in hundreds of spectral bands, far beyond what the human eye or standard satellites can perceive. This unlocks unprecedented insights for a wide range of industries. In agriculture, this data can monitor crop health, detect diseases, and improve yields. For urban planning and environmental monitoring, it can track pollution, deforestation, and the impact of climate change with incredible precision. The applications extend to energy and mining, helping to survey resources more responsibly. By providing this planetary-scale data, private companies are enabling smarter, data-driven decision-making for businesses and governments across the country.

The ripple effects of the private space boom extend far beyond the space sector itself. Building and launching rockets requires a vast supply chain, fuelling innovation in materials science, advanced manufacturing, software engineering, and avionics. The push for reusable rockets, with companies like Agnikul announcing missions to recover boosters from the ocean, is driving research into sustainable and cost-effective technologies. Furthermore, some startups are blurring the lines between space and other tech sectors. Agnikul is exploring using rocket upper stages as orbital AI data centres, leveraging the vacuum of space for cooling. This synergy creates high-skilled jobs, attracts foreign investment, and fosters a culture of deep-tech innovation that can spill over into all corners of the Indian economy. The growth has also seen experienced talent from ISRO moving to the private sector, transferring invaluable expertise and accelerating the growth of these new ventures.
