India's solar energy sector is expanding at a breathtaking pace. As of mid-2026, the country's installed solar capacity has surged, making it a global leader in renewable energy adoption. This growth isn't just about large-scale solar farms; a significant
push is coming from rooftop solar on homes and businesses, which is a major job creator. Recent studies estimate that India’s clean energy goals could create over 4.4 million jobs by 2030. However, this bright future depends on a crucial component: a large and competent workforce. The reality on the ground is that a lack of skilled technicians is becoming a major obstacle. Poor installation practices can lead to underperforming systems, safety hazards, and a drop in consumer confidence, threatening the entire solar revolution.
From 'Suryamitras' to Mobile Training
To bridge this gap, India has relied on programmes like the Suryamitra Skill Development Programme, initiated in 2015 to create a dedicated workforce for the solar sector. By some estimates, these programmes have trained tens of thousands of professionals, known as 'Suryamitras'. However, recognizing that more needs to be done, recent efforts have focused on making training more practical and accessible. An innovative approach involves the launch of solar-powered mobile training units. In June 2026, the government flagged off mobile vans designed to bring digital, financial, and solar skills directly to underserved communities across multiple states, demonstrating a shift towards more flexible and targeted training models. The 'Practical Test' of Quality

Furthermore, there is a notable gender imbalance, with women making up a very small percentage of those trained in government renewable energy programmes. For the industry, regulatory hurdles and delays in approvals from local power distribution companies (DISCOMs) continue to slow down projects, which can dampen the demand for installers. Restoring consumer trust, which has been eroded by unprofessional installers and inconsistent service, is another key battleground.
