Gambhir's Clear Message
Speaking after India's recent T20I series victory against Afghanistan, Gautam Gambhir laid out the situation in no uncertain terms. The primary reason for Hardik Pandya's continued absence from the top level of the sport is that his body is not yet ready
for the rigours of bowling a full spell in a One-Day International. "Hardik at the moment cannot bowl 10 overs, and he hasn't played a lot of cricket since the IPL," Gambhir stated. This isn't about a specific new injury, but rather a frank admission of his current physical limitations following a long layoff since the 2026 IPL season due to multiple injuries. The management's stance is clear: they will not risk pushing him back into the demanding environment of international cricket prematurely.
The 10-Over Litmus Test
Gambhir's focus on the 10-over mark is significant. In 50-over cricket, a team's balance often depends on having at least five bowlers who can complete a full quota of 10 overs each. An all-rounder like Pandya is invaluable because he allows the team to field an extra specialist batsman without compromising the bowling attack. However, his value diminishes if he cannot be relied upon as a full-time bowling option. If a captain can only use him for a few overs, it forces a difficult choice between weakening the batting lineup to include a fifth specialist bowler or risking being short of bowling resources. For years, Pandya's inability to consistently bowl a full spell has been a strategic challenge for the Indian team, a problem that dates back to his significant back surgery in 2019.
The Road to Recovery: India A
Instead of being fast-tracked into the senior squad, a clear path has been laid out for Pandya's return. He has been named in the India A squad for a series against Australia A, with his participation subject to fitness clearance. Gambhir confirmed that this was a deliberate strategy communicated directly to the player. The idea is to give Pandya crucial game time to build up his match fitness and bowling workload in a competitive, yet less intense, environment than a full international series. These matches will serve as a real-world test of how his body holds up to the cycle of playing, bowling, and recovering before he can be considered for a senior team comeback.
Implications for Team India and a New Contender
Pandya's prolonged absence has forced the team management to look at alternatives. Rising star Nitish Kumar Reddy is being seen as a crucial prospect in the seam-bowling all-rounder department. Gambhir noted that Reddy's development is important, especially with an eye on future tours and the 2027 ODI World Cup. In fact, Reddy was withdrawn from the Asian Games squad to play in the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, a series Pandya was not considered for. Interestingly, Gambhir did not rule out the possibility of playing both Pandya and Reddy in the same XI once Pandya is fully fit, suggesting a future with multiple all-round options could be on the cards.
