If you want to know if a new fertiliser helps a plant grow taller, you don't simultaneously change the amount of sunlight and water it gets. The same logic applies to your fitness. The principle of progressive overload is how we get stronger and build muscle over time by gradually increasing the demands placed on our bodies. These demands, or variables, include weight, repetitions, sets, rest time, and, of course, training frequency. To know if a change in one variable is the reason for your progress or lack thereof, all other variables must remain constant. When you change both your exercises and your frequency at the same time, you can’t be sure which change led to the result.

Training frequency refers to how often you work out in a given period, typically a week. You might be considering a change for several reasons. Perhaps your schedule has opened up, and you want to see if training five days a week instead of three accelerates your muscle gain. Or maybe life has become busier, and you need to know if you can maintain your strength by training just twice a week. Both are valid questions that can only be answered through careful testing. The goal is to determine the optimal frequency for your body, your recovery capacity, and your lifestyle. This is a significant adjustment, and its effects need to be measured cleanly.
Why Your Exercises Must Stay the Same
This is the core of the strategy. When you decide to test a new training frequency, keeping your core exercises the same for a training cycle of at least four to six weeks is crucial. There are three key reasons for this. First, it provides a consistent benchmark for progress. If your main goal is to increase your squat, you need to be squatting regularly to measure your strength gains accurately. If you swap squats for leg presses one week and lunges the next, you have no consistent data to track. Second, it allows for motor learning and skill mastery. Getting good at an exercise like a deadlift or overhead press takes practice. Consistent repetition improves your form, making the exercise safer and more effective. Finally, keeping exercises steady ensures a standardised stimulus. Different exercises stress muscles in slightly different ways. By sticking to the same lifts, you ensure that the primary change your body is adapting to is the new training frequency, not a new movement pattern.

Ready to test a new frequency? Here’s a simple plan. First, decide on the new frequency you want to test. Next, select a routine of core compound exercises (like squats, bench presses, deadlifts, rows) and a few isolation exercises you can stick with. For the next four to six weeks, perform this exact routine at your new frequency. Diligently track your performance: note the weights you lift, the reps and sets you complete, and how you feel. Are you energetic or fatigued? Is your performance improving, stalling, or declining? After the testing period, analyse the data. Did you get stronger? Did you feel better? The answers will tell you whether the new frequency is a good fit for you.
