A Major Boost for Festive Commuters
Central Railway has confirmed it will operate 418 special train services to manage the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming festival season, which includes Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. This proactive measure is designed to ease
the immense pressure on the rail network as millions of people travel to their hometowns and for holidays. These services will primarily originate from major hubs like Mumbai and Pune, connecting them to various destinations across the country. The announcement comes as a welcome relief for passengers who often face overcrowded trains and long waiting lists during this peak travel period between October and November 2026.
Why These Extra Services Are Crucial
Every year, the festival season witnesses a massive exodus of people from metropolitan areas like Mumbai. This migration places an extraordinary strain on the existing railway infrastructure, leading to severe overcrowding, safety concerns, and difficulty in securing confirmed tickets. The introduction of these 418 special services is a critical step in managing this annual rush. By adding capacity on high-demand routes, the railways aim to prevent dangerous levels of crowding in coaches, make travel more comfortable, and provide reliable options for those who plan their trips in advance. The services are a mix of reserved and general coaches, catering to the diverse needs of passengers.
Key Routes Connecting North and South India
A significant portion of the special services is targeted towards high-density corridors, particularly those connecting Mumbai to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, states that see heavy traffic during Diwali and Chhath Puja. For instance, 64 daily special services will run between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai and Gorakhpur from mid-October to mid-November. Additional services are also planned from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) to other cities in Uttar Pradesh like Mau and Banaras. Connectivity to South India has also been bolstered, with weekly AC special services scheduled between CSMT and Chennai, as well as special trains to Bengaluru.
Enhanced Connectivity Within Maharashtra
In addition to long-distance trains, Central Railway has also focused on improving connectivity within Maharashtra. Several special services will connect Mumbai with other major cities in the state. This includes 12 weekly superfast specials between CSMT and Nagpur, and another 12 weekly services to Kolhapur. A bi-weekly special train between CSMT and Latur is also part of the schedule, offering 26 additional trips to cater to regional commuters. These intrastate trains are vital for those traveling shorter distances to celebrate with their families and will stop at key stations like Pune, Nashik Road, Satara, and Solapur.
How to Book and Plan Your Journey
Bookings for these festival special trains opened in late September 2026. Passengers are strongly encouraged to book their tickets well in advance to secure confirmed seats. Tickets can be booked through all computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and online via the official IRCTC website and mobile app. Given the high demand, waiting lists are expected to fill up quickly. Travellers should regularly check the IRCTC portal for real-time availability and schedule updates. Railway authorities have advised passengers to travel only with valid tickets to avoid any inconvenience during their journey.
