Know Your Free Luggage Allowance
Before you pack, the first thing to understand is how much luggage you can carry for free. Indian Railways sets these limits based on your travel class. Passengers in AC First Class enjoy the highest allowance at 70 kg. Those in AC 2-Tier and First Class can carry up
to 50 kg free of charge. For travellers in Sleeper Class, the limit is 40 kg, and for Second Class, it is 35 kg. It's important to note that for AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the free allowance is 40 kg, which is also the maximum limit permitted in those coaches, meaning you cannot book excess luggage for these classes. Children between 5 and 12 years old, who travel on half-fare tickets, are entitled to their own free allowance of up to 50 kg.
What About Maximum Limits?
Beyond the free allowance, most classes have a maximum limit for luggage you can carry in the compartment, provided you pay for the excess weight. For instance, an AC First Class passenger can carry up to 150 kg in total, meaning they can book an additional 80 kg over their free 70 kg limit. Similarly, AC 2-Tier passengers have a maximum limit of 100 kg, Sleeper Class has a maximum of 80 kg, and Second Class has a 70 kg limit. Anything beyond these maximums, or oversized items, must be booked separately and transported in the brake van (the luggage van), not in your compartment.
The New Online Booking System
To simplify the process and save passengers from last-minute rushes, Indian Railways has introduced an online facility for booking excess luggage. Launched on July 31, 2026, this system allows passengers with confirmed tickets to declare and pay for their extra baggage digitally before their journey begins. This service integrates luggage payment with the ticketing system, eliminating the need to stand in separate queues at the station's parcel office. You can access this facility through the Indian Railways Parcel Portal or the IRCTC website while managing your ticket. This online option is available for AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, First Class, Sleeper, and Second Class travel.
Calculating the Cost of Excess Luggage
Booking your extra luggage in advance is not just convenient; it's also significantly cheaper than getting caught with it. If you pre-book your excess baggage, you will be charged 1.5 times the standard luggage rate. The minimum charge for booking excess luggage is ₹30. However, the penalty for being caught with un-booked excess luggage during a journey is severe. Passengers will be charged six times the normal luggage rate, a penalty designed to discourage overloading and ensure compliance. This strict enforcement aims to prevent crowded compartments and ensure a safer, more comfortable journey for all passengers.
Size and Dimension Rules Matter Too
Weight isn't the only factor; the size of your luggage is also regulated. For most coaches, trunks, suitcases, or boxes should not exceed 100 cm in length, 60 cm in breadth, and 25 cm in height. However, for passengers in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the space constraints are greater, and the allowed dimensions are smaller: 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm. Any luggage that exceeds these dimensions, regardless of its weight, is not permitted in the passenger compartment and must be booked into the luggage van.
Prohibited and Restricted Items
For the safety of all passengers, certain items are strictly forbidden from being carried as luggage. This includes flammable or explosive materials like firecrackers, hazardous liquids such as acid and petrol, compressed gases, and corrosive chemicals. Carrying such dangerous goods is a criminal offence under the Indian Railway Act and can lead to severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment. It's always wise to ensure your baggage contains only personal effects and permissible items to avoid any legal trouble.
