A Nationwide Effort to Ease Congestion
To combat the intense demand for tickets during the peak summer months, Indian Railways has announced a significant rollout of special train services across the country. Between April 15 and July 15, 2026, the national transporter has approved a massive
18,262 special train trips, a substantial increase from previous years, aimed at clearing waitlists and providing more confirmed berths. This move is designed to accommodate the surge in travel driven by school holidays, festivals, and seasonal migration. The plan involves nearly all railway zones, ensuring a coordinated, nationwide effort to improve connectivity and passenger convenience.
Zonal Breakdown: Where Are the Extra Trains?
The deployment of these special services is extensive, with several zones operating a high number of additional trips. Central Railway is set to run the most services with 3,082 trips, followed by East Central Railway with 2,711 trips. Other key zones contributing significantly include North Western Railway with 2,245 trips and Northern Railway with 2,090 trips. Western Railway has also announced 2,078 trips to cater to the rush. Just recently, on July 5, Central Railway announced an extension for 216 special train services, including daily trains on high-demand routes like Pune-Danapur and several weekly services connecting Maharashtra with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. These extensions run well into September, providing continued relief beyond the immediate summer peak.
Focus on High-Demand Routes
These special trains are being deployed on some of the country's most sought-after routes. Western Railway has extended services on key corridors including Mumbai Central to Banaras and Katihar, as well as routes connecting Udhna with Ayodhya Cantt, catering to both regular travelers and pilgrims. Similarly, Northern Railway has extended services on at least 14 pairs of special trains connecting Delhi with destinations in Bihar and Jharkhand through mid-July. These include services from Anand Vihar Terminal to Danapur and Muzaffarpur, and from New Delhi to Patna Junction. North Western Railway is also running holiday specials until July 15 and adding extra coaches to long-distance trains originating from cities like Jaipur and Jodhpur to manage passenger loads. Even the popular Kalka-Shimla tourist route is getting a daily special train until July 15.
How to Book Your Tickets
With thousands of trips already notified, a significant number of these special train tickets are available for booking. Passengers are advised to book their tickets through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the mobile app, or at computerised reservation centres. It is crucial to note that the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) for these trains may vary. For some of the newly extended services announced by Central Railway, bookings commenced on July 5. Given the high demand, travelers should plan their journeys well in advance and book as soon as reservations open. For unreserved coaches on certain special trains, tickets can be purchased through the UTS ticketing system.
A Welcome Relief, But Act Fast
The introduction of over 18,000 extra trips is a significant and welcome step by Indian Railways to alleviate the pressure on its network during the busiest time of the year. This massive expansion, which represents a nearly 47% increase over the summer specials run in 2025, is the largest single seasonal expansion ever notified by the carrier. While this greatly improves the chances of securing a confirmed seat, the demand remains exceptionally high. Passengers are still encouraged to act quickly, monitor the IRCTC portal for new announcements and ticket availability, and be flexible with their travel dates where possible. These extra services are a lifeline, but they won't last forever.
