The ideal time for a Konkan road trip is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and the skies are clear, offering the best conditions for driving and sightseeing. The drive follows National Highway 66 (NH 66), a route famous for its scenic
beauty, winding through fishing villages and coconut groves. While the highway has seen significant upgrades, with recent reports indicating it's nearly 94% complete, some stretches may still have construction, so it's wise to start your days early. Before you leave, ensure your vehicle is serviced, pack light clothing, swimwear, comfortable footwear, and a camera to capture the stunning landscapes. Carry snacks and water, as amenities can be sparse between larger towns.
First Stop: Alibaug and Murud-Janjira
Your journey begins as you leave Mumbai and head towards Panvel, the gateway to the Konkan region. The first major destination is Alibaug, a popular weekend getaway known for its accessible beaches like Alibaug Beach and the slightly quieter Nagaon Beach. A short drive further south takes you to Murud, where the main attraction is the majestic Murud-Janjira Fort, an unconquered 17th-century marvel standing on an island in the Arabian Sea. Continuing south on NH 66, you'll reach Dapoli, often called the 'Mini Mahabaleshwar' of Konkan. This area offers a mix of hill station coolness and coastal beauty. Explore the pristine beaches of Harnai, Ladghar, and the secluded Kolthare Beach, which provide unobstructed views of the horizon, making them perfect for your first sunset stop. For a unique viewpoint, the cliffs above Anjarle beach offer a stunning panoramic vista as the sun goes down. Dapoli is also a great place to spot dolphins on an early morning boat tour.
