The End of the Traditional Essay?
For decades, the essay has been a cornerstone of higher education, a primary tool for gauging a student's understanding. But the rise of generative AI that can produce coherent, well-structured text has shaken this foundation. A recent report from MIT
noted that current AI technologies can now credibly complete most undergraduate assignments, rendering many traditional homework tasks unreliable as indicators of student learning. This reality has moved the conversation beyond simply catching cheaters with detection software. Instead, it's pushing educators to question if an assignment that can be easily outsourced to a machine was ever truly measuring the most important skills.
From Product to Process
In response, many universities are redesigning assignments to focus less on the final product and more on the student's process. Rather than a single submission, assignments are being 'scaffolded,' broken into multiple smaller tasks like proposals, annotated bibliographies, outlines, and rough drafts. Some professors now require students to use Google Docs or similar platforms to show their revision history, proving that the work was built gradually rather than pasted in moments before the deadline. Others are reintroducing oral exams, in-class presentations, and video reflections—formats where students must articulate their thinking and defend their work in real-time, something an AI cannot do for them.
AI as a Co-Pilot, Not an Autopilot
Instead of outright bans, a growing number of institutions are embracing a new model: teaching students how to use AI responsibly as a powerful tool. The goal is to foster AI literacy, which includes understanding the technology's capabilities, limitations, and potential biases. At universities like Carnegie Mellon, coursework is being redesigned to weave in AI as a tool for brainstorming, checking for clarity, or exploring counterarguments. The focus is shifting to teaching students how to collaborate with technology effectively. For example, a project at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences had students use AI to help create a blueprint for a community health program, complementing their creativity rather than replacing it.
A New Focus on Human-Centric Skills
Ultimately, the disruption caused by AI is forcing education to recalibrate its priorities toward skills that remain uniquely human. With AI handling routine information retrieval, the value of a university education lies more in developing critical thinking, creativity, ethical judgment, and collaborative problem-solving. Assignments are being redesigned to be more personal and reflective, asking students to connect course material to their own experiences or to in-class discussions—tasks that AI struggles with. As universities from UCLA to Purdue begin to embed AI competency into their curricula, the message is clear: the goal is not to produce students who can recall facts, but graduates who can think critically and adapt in a world where they will constantly work alongside intelligent machines.
