A Renewed Focus on Speed and Efficiency
Following the peak filing season which concluded for most individual taxpayers on July 31, the Income Tax Department has shifted its focus to processing the crores of returns filed. Recent reports and taxpayer experiences suggest a significant push to expedite
this process, particularly for returns that have been successfully e-verified. While there isn't an official new timeline announced, the department's actions indicate a clear intention to reduce the waiting period for refunds. This move is part of a broader trend of leveraging technology to make tax administration more efficient. For many taxpayers with simple, clean returns, refunds have been processed in a matter of days, and sometimes even hours, after verification.
The Non-Negotiable Step: ITR Verification
The single most critical factor for speedy processing is ITR verification. Filing your return is only the first half of the process; the department will not even begin to process an ITR until it has been verified by the taxpayer. An unverified return is treated as invalid. Taxpayers have 30 days from the date of filing to complete this step. Delaying verification directly translates to a delay in receiving any potential refund. This step confirms that you, the taxpayer, have indeed filed the return and that the data submitted is authentic and final from your end. Without this confirmation, your return remains in limbo, invisible to the processing systems at the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru.
How to E-Verify Your Tax Return
The good news is that e-verification is a simple and quick process that can be completed in minutes through multiple digital methods. The most common and convenient ways include: 1. Aadhaar OTP: The most popular method. If your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar and your PAN is linked to Aadhaar, you can receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on your registered mobile to instantly verify your return. 2. Net Banking: You can log in to your net banking account and access the income tax e-filing portal through it to verify without a separate login. 3. Bank Account EVC: You can generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) through your pre-validated bank account. 4. Demat Account EVC: Similar to a bank account, an EVC can be generated via a pre-validated Demat account. For those unable to use these digital methods, there is still the option of physically signing the ITR-V (acknowledgement form) and sending it by post to the CPC in Bengaluru. However, this is the slowest method and relies on postal delivery times.
Beyond Verification: Other Reasons for Refund Delays
Even after successful verification, some refunds may still face delays. Being aware of these common hurdles can help you proactively ensure a smooth process. A primary cause for delay is a mismatch between the data in your ITR and the information available with the department in your Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS), or Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS). Another frequent issue is incorrect or non-validated bank account details. The refund can only be credited to a pre-validated bank account that is linked with your PAN. If the account number or IFSC code is wrong, or the account is dormant, the refund will fail. Lastly, if you have an outstanding tax demand from a previous assessment year, the department may adjust your current refund against that demand, which can also delay the process as a notification is first issued to you.
How to Check Your Refund Status
If you are waiting for your refund, you can easily track its status online. The official Income Tax e-filing portal is the best source of information. After logging in, navigate to 'e-File' > 'Income Tax Returns' > 'View Filed Returns'. Here you can see the status of your return for the relevant assessment year. The status will show if your return is 'under processing', 'processed', or if a 'refund has been issued'. If a refund has been issued, it will also display a payment reference number. Generally, once a return is processed and a refund is determined, it takes a few more working days for the amount to be credited to your bank account. Experts suggest that the typical timeframe from verification to credit is about four to five weeks, though this can vary significantly.
