Furthermore, as the sector commercialises, new specialist roles are emerging. There is a growing need for space lawyers to navigate international treaties and commercial contracts, as well as financial analysts to guide venture capital investment into promising startups. Even science communicators play a vital role in making the sector's complex work accessible to the public and inspiring the next generation.
Skills That Give You an Edge
Technical proficiency remains crucial. Expertise in software and programming languages like Python, C++, and MATLAB is highly valuable across all tracks, even for hardware-focused roles, for simulation and data analysis. Knowledge of specialised software like Systems Tool Kit (STK) for mission analysis or CAD tools is also a significant advantage. However, private companies are increasingly looking for more than just academic credentials. They value practical experience. Building projects like a CubeSat, participating in robotics competitions, or completing internships with ISRO or a startup can make a candidate stand out. For those in data-focused roles, skills in machine learning, AI, and remote sensing are in high demand as companies seek to extract maximum value from their satellite assets.
How to Get Your Foot in the Door
For those aspiring to join ISRO, the primary route remains the annual Scientist/Engineer exam conducted by the ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB), which is highly competitive. The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram offers a more direct path into ISRO for undergraduate students. In the private sector, recruitment is more dynamic. Startups hire aggressively through online job portals, campus placements at top engineering colleges like the IITs and NITs, and professional networking sites. For these roles, a strong portfolio of projects and demonstrated skills often matters as much as academic scores. Many experienced scientists and engineers are also migrating from ISRO to the private sector, bringing valuable expertise that helps these new companies grow.
