A Landmark Connection Years in the Making
The arrival of the Vande Bharat Express in Srinagar is the culmination of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a monumental infrastructure project decades in the making. This ambitious undertaking was designed to connect the Kashmir Valley
with the rest of India's rail network, navigating the formidable Himalayan terrain. The project involved constructing numerous tunnels and bridges, including two engineering marvels: the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. With the completion of this final link, a reliable, all-weather transportation artery to the valley is now a reality, ending the region's heavy dependence on the often-disrupted Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Slashing Travel Time Dramatically
The most immediate and significant impact of the Vande Bharat service is the drastic reduction in travel time. The road journey between Jammu and Srinagar can take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours, and is frequently subject to long delays due to landslides, snow, or heavy traffic. The Vande Bharat Express now covers the 269-kilometre distance in under five hours. This transforms the journey from a full-day ordeal into a comfortable half-day trip. Passengers can leave Jammu in the morning and arrive in Srinagar by lunchtime, a convenience that was previously unimaginable. This speed and predictability make planning a trip to Kashmir far easier for tourists, business travellers, and locals alike.
All-Weather Reliability and Comfort
One of the biggest challenges of Kashmir travel has always been the weather. The Jammu-Srinagar highway is notoriously prone to closures during winter due to heavy snowfall and in the monsoon because of landslides. This unreliability often left travellers stranded and cut off the valley's supply chain. The Vande Bharat provides a dependable, all-weather alternative. The trains designed for this route are specially equipped for the region's climate, with heating systems and other winter-resilient features to ensure smooth operations even in sub-zero temperatures. Passengers can now travel in climate-controlled coaches, enjoying scenic views of the Pir Panjal range through panoramic windows, regardless of the conditions outside.
Boosting Tourism and the Local Economy
Easier access is expected to provide a massive boost to Kashmir's tourism sector. The convenience and safety of the Vande Bharat are making the valley a more attractive destination for a wider range of travellers. The service has been running with full occupancy since its launch, prompting Indian Railways to increase coach capacity and approve a third Vande Bharat train for the route to meet the high demand. Beyond tourism, the railway is a game-changer for the local economy. It facilitates the faster and more cost-effective transport of Kashmir's famous horticultural produce, like apples and cherries, as well as handicrafts, to markets across India. Similarly, the first freight trains carrying essentials like fuel have also begun using the new line, ensuring a more stable supply chain for the entire region.
