the previous 60-day visa-free period that was in place since 2024. No Visa on Arrival Needed
Under this revised system, Indian travellers benefit from a visa exemption, meaning you do not need to apply for a visa beforehand for stays up to 30 days. It's important not to confuse this with a Visa on Arrival (VoA). Earlier proposals in 2026 had considered moving India to a 15-day VoA category with a fee, but this plan was ultimately dropped. The final, approved framework places India firmly in the 30-day visa-exempt list, simplifying the process for short tourist trips. For those who wish to stay longer than 30 days, applying for an appropriate e-Visa through the Royal Thai Embassy before travelling is the recommended course of action.
Essential Documents for Entry
While a visa isn't required for a 30-day trip, you must have several key documents ready for immigration. First, your passport must have at least six months of validity from your date of arrival in Thailand. You will also need proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket and details of your accommodation, such as hotel bookings. Immigration authorities also require tourists to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online, which can be done within 72 hours before you arrive. It is wise to have all these documents easily accessible to ensure a smooth entry process.
Proof of Funds Requirement
A crucial requirement that travellers must not overlook is the proof of sufficient funds. Thai authorities mandate that tourists entering under the visa exemption facility should carry a minimum of 20,000 Thai Baht (THB) per person in cash. For a family travelling together, the requirement is 40,000 THB. While not every visitor is checked, immigration officers reserve the right to randomly ask for this proof. Being unprepared can lead to complications at the border, so it is best to carry the stipulated amount.
Planning for the New Rules
The transition to the new 30-day rule is date-specific. If you enter Thailand on or before September 14, 2026, you will still fall under the old 60-day visa-free rule. Anyone arriving from September 15, 2026, onwards will be granted a stay of up to 30 days.
