At its core, an Earth-Observation (EO) satellite is a sophisticated tool designed to watch over our planet. Unlike communication satellites that relay signals, EO satellites use advanced sensors—cameras, radars, and scanners—to collect data about the
Earth's surface, atmosphere, and oceans. They monitor everything from weather patterns and crop health to urban expansion. For a country as diverse and dynamic as India, having a robust network of these satellites is a strategic necessity. This data empowers governance, fuels economic activity, and saves lives by providing early warnings for natural disasters. Each satellite is a piece of a larger puzzle, designed with a specific job.
ISRO's Existing Eyes in the Sky
EOS-05 is not launching into a vacuum. It joins a formidable constellation of Indian remote sensing satellites, a program ISRO has built over decades. This network includes the Cartosat series for high-resolution mapping, the Resourcesat series for managing natural resources, and the INSAT series for meteorology. More recently, the unified EOS series has streamlined this effort. Key players already in orbit include EOS-04, an all-weather radar imaging satellite that can see through clouds and darkness, making it invaluable for surveillance and disaster monitoring. Then there is EOS-06 (Oceansat-3), which is dedicated to observing our oceans, helping predict weather patterns and supporting the fishing community. Together, these satellites form a multi-layered web of observation capabilities.
Introducing EOS-05: A Leap in Capability
So, what new dimension does EOS-05 bring? While its predecessors specialised in radar or oceanography, EOS-05 is expected to push the boundaries of spectral imaging.
