Prioritise Comfort and Sleep
Long train journeys, especially overnight, demand a focus on comfort. While AC coaches often provide bedding, it's wise to bring your own for hygiene and extra warmth. A travel pillow or an inflatable neck pillow can make a huge difference in getting
some rest. Even in warmer weather, AC compartments can get surprisingly chilly, so packing a light jacket, shawl, or a hoodie is a must. Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing like track pants and a cotton t-shirt are ideal for long hours of sitting. Also, pack a pair of flip-flops or slippers, which are easy to slip on for a walk to the washroom.
Stay Safe and Secure
Festive travel often means crowded trains, making security a priority. Always carry a sturdy lock and chain to secure your luggage to the berth, especially at night. Keep your valuables like your wallet, phone, and tickets in a smaller bag that you can keep close to you at all times. A waist pouch or a small daypack is perfect for this. It's also a good idea to have digital and physical copies of your tickets and ID cards. When it comes to personal safety, be cautious about accepting food from strangers and always keep an eye on your belongings.
Hygiene and Health Essentials
Maintaining hygiene on a long train journey is crucial for your well-being. Pack a dedicated toiletry kit with essentials like a toothbrush, toothpaste, facewash, and deodorant. Wet wipes, hand sanitiser, and toilet paper or tissues are non-negotiable items for train travel in India. Train toilets can be challenging, so having these items handy makes the experience much more manageable. Also, include a basic first-aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, and any personal medications you might need, such as tablets for indigestion or motion sickness.
Snacks and Hydration
While train journeys offer a unique culinary experience with vendors selling chai and snacks, it’s always best to be prepared. Pack a good supply of home-cooked food like parathas or puri-sabzi for the first leg of your journey. For the rest of the trip, dry snacks such as nuts, biscuits, energy bars, and fruit are great to have on hand. Carrying your own reusable water bottle is not only eco-friendly but also ensures you stay hydrated throughout the journey. You can refill it at stations or use it to store water you purchase.
Entertainment for the Long Haul
A long train journey is a perfect opportunity to disconnect and relax, but it can also get boring. To keep yourself occupied, bring along a book, a magazine, or load your phone or tablet with movies, TV shows, and music. A good pair of headphones is essential to enjoy your entertainment without disturbing fellow passengers. A fully charged power bank is another must-have, as charging points on trains are often limited and may not always work. This ensures your devices stay powered up for entertainment, communication, and capturing the scenic views along the way.
