The New Normal: Fresh and Renewal Fees
As of July 1, 2026, the Government of India has implemented the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, leading to a substantial increase in passport-related fees. For adult applicants, the cost for a standard 36-page passport booklet, whether for a fresh
application or a renewal (re-issue), has risen from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. If you are a frequent traveller and prefer a jumbo 60-page booklet, the price has been increased from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500. These revised rates apply to all normal processing applications and represent the first major fee hike in several years, making it essential to factor these new costs into your travel budget from the very beginning.
Paying for Speed: The Tatkaal Premium
For those in a hurry, the Tatkaal scheme offers an expedited service, but this convenience now comes at a significantly higher price. The fee for a 36-page passport under the Tatkaal scheme has jumped from ₹3,500 to ₹5,000. Similarly, the cost for a 60-page Tatkaal passport is now ₹6,000, up from the previous ₹4,000. It is important for applicants to note that not everyone is eligible for the Tatkaal service, and you should check the criteria on the official Passport Seva website before planning for this expedited option. The substantial premium underscores the financial benefit of applying for your passport well in advance of any planned travel.
The Cost of Mishaps: Lost or Damaged Passports
Losing your passport or having it damaged can be a stressful experience, and now it is also a much more expensive one. The fee for replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged 36-page passport under the normal scheme has been increased to ₹5,000. For a 60-page booklet, the replacement cost is ₹6,000. If you need a replacement urgently through the Tatkaal scheme, the costs are even steeper. A 36-page replacement via Tatkaal will set you back ₹7,500, while a 60-page replacement costs ₹8,500. This sharp increase in penalties highlights the importance of keeping your passport safe and secure at all times.
Costs for Minors and Miscellaneous Services
Families planning to travel should also take note of the revised fees for minors (applicants below 18 years of age). A fresh or re-issued 36-page passport for a minor under the normal scheme now costs ₹1,750, up from ₹1,000. Under the Tatkaal scheme, the fee for a minor's passport has increased from ₹3,000 to ₹4,250. Furthermore, other services have also seen a price revision. For instance, the fee for a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), often required for employment or long-term visas abroad, has been increased from ₹500 to ₹750.
How to Pay Securely and Avoid Scams
The Ministry of External Affairs has made it clear that all payments for passport services must be made online through the official Passport Seva portal: www.passportindia.gov.in. The portal accepts payments via credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, RuPay), internet banking, and UPI. It is crucial to use only this official website for all transactions. The Ministry has issued warnings about numerous fraudulent websites and mobile apps that collect data and charge extra fees. Never make payments through third-party agents or unofficial websites. Once the payment is made online, you can schedule your appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). The application fee is non-refundable and remains valid for one year from the date of the first appointment.
