A new forecast from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) projects a massive opportunity for the global technology services market, with up to $200 billion in net new demand expected by 2030, largely fuelled by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence.
Deconstructing the $200 Billion Figure
The
eye-catching number from BCG's recent report, titled 'The Talent Is Already on Your Payroll. The Clock Isn't', represents a significant, yet complex, shift in the global tech landscape. The report projects that while AI-led services will generate between $300 billion and $400 billion in new growth by 2030, the efficiency of AI will also render about $200 billion of traditional services obsolete. This results in a net market opportunity of $100 billion to $200 billion for tech firms that can successfully pivot and capitalize on the new wave of AI-driven demand. The global services market is expected to grow from approximately $1.7 trillion in 2025 to over $2.2 trillion by 2030, with this AI-powered transformation at its core.
Artificial Intelligence: The Engine of Change
The primary driver behind this monumental shift is artificial intelligence, specifically what the report terms 'Applied AI'. This refers to the practical deployment, operation, and maintenance of AI solutions within real-world business environments. The demand is moving away from simply using AI for internal efficiency and toward building and running complex 'agentic AI' systems for clients. These are systems capable of autonomous reasoning and executing multi-step workflows to achieve business outcomes, not just generate outputs. As enterprises in every sector from finance to healthcare accelerate their digital transformation journeys, they are increasingly seeking partners to help build and operationalize these sophisticated AI use cases.
India's Pivotal Role and Opportunity
India's technology industry, already a global powerhouse generating over $200 billion in annual exports, is uniquely positioned to capture a significant share of this new market. Indian firms currently account for a substantial portion of the global services market. The country’s vast talent pool of over 5.8 million tech professionals, combined with decades of experience in managing large-scale, complex technology projects for global clients, provides a solid foundation. However, the nature of the work is changing. The report suggests that the advantage will shift from a headcount-based model to an outcome-based one, where value is derived from the results delivered by AI platforms, not just the number of people working on a project.
The Talent Decision: Reskilling from Within
Crucially, the BCG report argues that tech services firms do not have an AI 'talent shortage' but rather a 'talent decision' to make. The experts needed to deliver these next generation services are largely already employed by these companies. The challenge lies in reskilling and redeploying them effectively. For instance, a data scientist can be trained to become a forward deployed engineer who works directly with clients, or a DevOps engineer can evolve into an AI Ops engineer. The report identifies a significant gap: traditional tech firms have only about 10–15% of their AI staff in 'Applied AI' roles, compared to 90–95% in AI native companies. Closing this gap by focusing on internal training and new delivery models will be essential for legacy players to stay competitive.
Navigating the Path Forward
While the opportunity is immense, seizing it requires a strategic reset. Indian tech firms must accelerate their move up the value chain, shifting from being execution partners to innovation leaders. This involves investing in proprietary intellectual property, building AI native platforms, and embracing new commercial models linked to performance and outcomes. Furthermore, it requires a national focus on building the necessary infrastructure, such as data centers, to support the widespread adoption of AI. The firms that hesitate risk being left behind, focusing only on the contracting portion of the market, while those that act with clarity and speed will be positioned to lead the next era of growth.
