Planning Your Coastal Escape
The journey from Mumbai to Murud is roughly 150-160 kilometres and can take four to five hours, depending on traffic. The most scenic route involves driving down NH66 (the Mumbai-Goa highway) or taking the Ro-Ro ferry from Mumbai's Ferry Wharf to Mandwa,
which cuts down driving time and offers a delightful sea-breeze start to your trip. From Mandwa, it's a beautiful coastal drive through Alibaug. For the best experience, start early to avoid city traffic. The ideal time to go is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and the sea is calm, perfect for all activities. Monsoons offer lush greenery but rough seas mean swimming and water sports are off-limits.
First Stop: Kashid's White Sands
About 30 kilometres south of Alibaug lies Kashid Beach, often considered one of the finest near Mumbai. While not a total secret anymore, its charm endures. Unlike the darker sand of beaches closer to Alibaug, Kashid boasts a stunning stretch of white sand and clearer blue waters, flanked by a dense line of casuarina trees that provide welcome shade. It's an ideal first proper stop to stretch your legs, feel the clean sand, and maybe indulge in some local seafood from the shacks lining the shore. For the more adventurous, a range of water sports like jet skiing and banana boat rides are available during the tourist season.
A Detour to Historic Korlai
For a mix of history and quietude, make a stop at Korlai. This unique destination features a beach with a blend of white and black sand against the dramatic backdrop of the historic Korlai Fort. Built by the Portuguese in 1521, the fort sits on a hill overlooking the sea and guards the Revdanda creek. A short hike up to the ruins rewards you with panoramic views of the Arabian Sea. The beach itself is less crowded than its famous neighbours, offering a more peaceful experience. You can also visit the still-operational lighthouse located near the fort's southern gate.
The Birdwatcher's Paradise: Akshi Beach
Just a few kilometres from the main Alibaug town, Akshi Beach maintains a surprisingly tranquil identity. Known for its clean, calm waters and a shoreline dotted with palms and casuarina trees, it feels like a glimpse into the Konkan coast of old. What truly sets Akshi apart is its status as a prime birdwatching spot, especially during the winter months. The beach attracts an incredible variety of migratory birds, with over 200 species recorded here. Birdwatchers can spot gulls, terns, plovers, and sandpipers along the shore, making it a haven for nature lovers and photographers seeking a quiet corner.
The Final Destination: Historic Murud
Your road trip culminates in the sleepy, historic fishing town of Murud. The main attraction here is the formidable Murud-Janjira Fort, an unconquered 16th-century sea fortress located on an oval-shaped rock off the coast. Originally a wooden structure built by local fishermen, it was transformed into a stone bastion by Malik Ambar of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. The fort withstood numerous attacks from the Marathas, Mughals, and Portuguese, earning its 'unconquerable' moniker. You can take a short boat ride from the Rajpuri jetty to explore the fort's impressive ramparts, cannons, and ruined palaces. The town of Murud itself has a wide, dark-sand beach perfect for watching a spectacular sunset over the Arabian Sea.
