An Unexpected Paradise, Now Closer Than Ever
For years, Kazakhstan has been a destination on the edge of the Indian travel map, known for its vast steppes but less for its breathtaking alpine scenery. That’s quickly changing. Airlines like IndiGo and Air Astana have made Central Asia more accessible
with direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and the gateway to the majestic Tien Shan mountains. The flight is surprisingly short, averaging around four hours from Delhi. With more competitive fares, especially during the autumn shoulder season, what once felt like a distant expedition is now a viable long-weekend trip. Autumn, from September to October, is arguably the best time to visit. The intense summer heat subsides, leaving behind crisp air, stable weather, and landscapes ablaze in gold, red, and orange hues. It’s a photographer’s dream and a hiker’s paradise, with fewer crowds than the peak summer months.
Kolsai Lakes: The Pearls of the Tien Shan
Often called the “Pearls of the Northern Tien Shan,” the Kolsai Lakes are a system of three stunning alpine lakes nestled in a national park about a four-hour drive from Almaty. During autumn, the surrounding pine and birch forests turn a brilliant gold, creating a spectacular contrast against the crystal-clear, emerald water. The first and most accessible lake, Lower Kolsai, sits at an altitude of 1,818 meters and offers activities like boating and horseback riding. For those seeking more adventure, a well-marked hiking trail connects to the second, more secluded Middle Kolsai Lake. The journey through the quiet, colourful forest is as beautiful as the destination itself. The area offers a tranquil escape, where the only sounds are the crunch of leaves underfoot and the gentle lapping of water.
Charyn Canyon: Central Asia’s Grand Canyon
While not a traditional mountain escape, Charyn Canyon is a must-see natural wonder located about 200 kilometers east of Almaty. Often compared to the Grand Canyon in the USA, its dramatic red rock formations, sculpted over 12 million years, are particularly stunning under the soft, low sun of autumn. The most famous section, the “Valley of Castles,” features towering, whimsical rock pillars that you can walk among. A trip here can be done in a day from Almaty, often combined with a visit to the Kolsai Lakes over a weekend. In autumn, the cooler temperatures make hiking along the canyon floor much more comfortable, allowing you to fully appreciate the scale and ancient beauty of this geological marvel without the oppressive summer heat.
Big Almaty Lake: The Turquoise Mountain Jewel
Just a 40-minute drive from the city center, Big Almaty Lake is one of the most accessible and iconic sights in the region. This high-altitude reservoir, perched at 2,500 meters, is famous for its striking turquoise water, the color of which changes with the seasons. In autumn, the experience is magical; the air is crisp, and the surrounding slopes are a patchwork of evergreen firs and golden deciduous trees, all framed by snow-dusted peaks. While swimming is not permitted as the lake is a major source of drinking water for Almaty, it’s a perfect spot for light hiking, picnics, and photography. Its proximity to the city makes it an ideal half-day trip to breathe in the fresh mountain air and witness some of Kazakhstan's most photogenic scenery.
Shymbulak: Adventure Above the Clouds
For those who want activities alongside the views, Shymbulak Mountain Resort is the answer. Located just 25 kilometers from Almaty, it's a year-round destination that truly shines in every season. In winter, it’s a premier ski resort, but in autumn, it offers breathtaking gondola rides up to Talgar Pass at 3,200 meters. From here, the panoramic views of the Zailiyskiy Alatau range are spectacular. The resort transforms from April to October, offering hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The crisp autumn air is perfect for trekking the trails that crisscross the slopes, providing stunning vistas without the need for skis or snowboards. It's an easy way to experience high-altitude adventure and see the mountains preparing for winter.
