Eligibility for the Free Tourist Visa
To take advantage of the DCT's free visa scheme, Indian passport holders must meet several specific conditions. The booking must be a package that includes both a return flight from India and a hotel stay of at least three consecutive nights in Abu Dhabi. The entire trip must take place between August 1 and October 31, 2026. It's crucial to book through a participating partner, like Akbar Travels, as flight-only or hotel-only bookings do not qualify for this promotion. Since the offer is limited to 20,000 visas, it's wise to confirm availability with your travel provider early.
The Free 48-Hour Transit Visa
For travellers with a layover in the UAE, a 48-hour transit visa is available completely free of charge. This option is perfect for those who want to leave the airport and get a quick taste of Abu Dhabi between flights. This visa is single-entry and non-extendable. To get it, you typically need to apply in advance through a UAE-based airline like Etihad or Emirates that you are flying with. While the government fee is waived, be aware that airlines or agents may charge a service fee for processing the application.
Visa on Arrival for US, UK, or EU Visa Holders
Indian passport holders with a valid visa or residence permit (green card) from the United States, United Kingdom, or an EU member state may be eligible for a visa on arrival. This visa is typically valid for a 14-day stay and is granted at the immigration counter upon arrival in the UAE. It's important to note that this is not entirely free; there is usually a fee of around AED 100. Your passport and the qualifying visa must both have a validity of at least six months from your date of travel. This 14-day visa can often be extended once for another 14 days for an additional fee.
Etihad's Stopover Program: Another Route to Explore
If you're flying with Etihad Airways, their stopover program can be another excellent way to explore Abu Dhabi. The airline frequently offers packages that include a complimentary one or two-night stay in a 3- or 4-star hotel. While this program provides a free hotel, the visa itself is not always included. Travellers must either be eligible for a visa on arrival or pre-arrange a transit visa. Etihad can assist with processing a 96-hour transit visa for a fee, which is ideal for those who want to take full advantage of their stopover stay.
Essential Documents and Tips
Regardless of the visa type, certain documents are always required. You will need a passport valid for at least six months, a passport-sized photograph with a white background, and a confirmed return or onward flight ticket. When applying, ensure all your scanned documents are clear and meet the specified requirements to avoid rejection.
