The Good News Confirmed
In a decision that brings relief to millions of Indian travellers, the Thai cabinet confirmed on Tuesday that it will continue to allow visa-free entry for Indian passport holders. However, the policy has been adjusted. The previous temporary 60-day visa-free stay
has been replaced with a standard 30-day visa-free allowance. This move solidifies India’s position as a key tourism market for Thailand and removes the confusion that had started to impact travel bookings. The Thai Tourism Minister, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, stated that the decision was made to align with the typical travel behaviour of Indian tourists, who represent a significant market for the country.
A Brief Period of Uncertainty
The clarification was necessary after a proposal approved by the Thai cabinet in May caused considerable confusion. That plan intended to overhaul the country's entire visa framework, reducing the list of visa-exempt nations from 93 to 54. Under that proposal, India was set to be removed from the visa-free list, which would have meant travellers would need to revert to a more complex visa-on-arrival process. Although the new rules were never officially implemented, the announcement alone was enough to create uncertainty, leading to a reported decline of nearly 20% in arrivals from India as travellers became hesitant to book trips.
Why the Change of Heart?
The reversal appears to be a direct response to market feedback and economic realities. India is Thailand’s third-largest source of tourists, trailing only China and Malaysia. From January 1 to early July 2026, over 1.2 million Indian tourists visited the country, making them a crucial component of Thailand's vital tourism industry, which generated nearly $50 billion in 2025. The drop in bookings after the May announcement sent a clear signal to Thai authorities about the importance of seamless travel for Indian visitors. By confirming visa-free access, Thailand is protecting a key economic driver and acknowledging the significant contribution of Indian travellers.
What This Means for Your Travel Plans
For the vast majority of Indian holidaymakers, this is a positive development. The new 30-day visa-free stay is more than sufficient for typical tourist trips, as the average stay for Indian visitors is around 7.2 days. This means you can continue to plan your trips to Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai without the cost or hassle of applying for a visa beforehand. The new policy will officially come into effect 15 days after it is published in Thailand’s Royal Gazette. Travellers should also remember to complete the online Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before their flight. While the visa situation is now clear, it is always wise to carry copies of your return tickets and hotel bookings.
A Win for Indian Travellers
This decision by the Thai government is a recognition of the growing influence of the Indian globetrotter. In a competitive global tourism market, countries are increasingly recognizing the value of simplifying entry procedures to attract more visitors. By reversing its earlier plan and cementing a 30-day visa-free policy, Thailand has ensured it remains one of the most accessible and appealing international destinations for Indians. The move not only benefits tourists but also supports the entire travel ecosystem, from airlines to local businesses in Thailand that rely on a steady stream of visitors. It reaffirms the strong and friendly ties between the two nations, built on a foundation of cultural exchange and tourism.
