Onam 2026: Mark Your Calendar
Onam is a ten-day harvest festival that culminates on the most auspicious day, Thiruvonam. In 2026, the festival begins with Atham on August 16 and concludes with Thiruvonam falling on Wednesday, August 26. This is the main day of celebration, marked
by the grand vegetarian feast known as the Onam Sadhya. The official Onam Week celebrations organised by Kerala Tourism will take place from August 24 to August 30, primarily in the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram. Key public holidays in Kerala are from August 25 to August 28, making it a peak travel period.
Getting There and Around: The Festive Rush
Onam is a homecoming season for Malayalis, meaning trains and flights get booked out months in advance. Securing your travel to Kerala early is crucial. Indian Railways often announces special train services to clear the festive rush, with around 112 special services planned for 2026 connecting Kerala with major cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Similarly, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates special interstate bus services. For 2026, KSRTC has announced additional buses from Bengaluru to various cities in Kerala between August 18 and September 2. Once in Kerala, be prepared for heavy traffic, especially around major event venues. Renting a car can offer flexibility, but it's wise to start early in the day to avoid congestion caused by festival processions.
Where to Stay: Book Well in Advance
Accommodation is the next critical piece of your planning puzzle. Hotels, resorts, and especially homestays fill up fast, with many travellers booking their stays two to three months ahead. Prices are at their peak during the festival. If you want to be at the heart of the cultural events, consider staying in Thrissur, known for the vibrant Pulikali (tiger dance), or Thiruvananthapuram for the state-run Onam Week celebrations. For a backwater-centric experience, Alappuzha (Alleppey) is an excellent base, placing you close to snake boat races. Many hotels and resorts offer special Onam packages that include the Sadhya feast and cultural performances, providing a curated festival experience.
Key Events and Cultural Highlights
Beyond the essential Onam Sadhya, the festival is packed with unique cultural events. The celebrations officially kick off with the Athachamayam procession in Thripunithura near Kochi on August 16, a parade of folk art forms, decorated elephants, and musicians. One of the biggest draws is the Vallam Kali, or snake boat races. While the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes place before the main Onam week on August 22, the more traditional Aranmula Boat Race is scheduled for August 30. In Thrissur, the wild and colourful Pulikali, where artists painted as tigers dance through the streets, is a must-see spectacle on August 29. Throughout the ten days, you'll see homes and public spaces adorned with intricate Pookalam, or floral carpets, which grow larger and more elaborate each day leading up to Thiruvonam.
