The Dawn of Agentic Payments
For years, UPI has operated on a simple, powerful principle: you tap, you enter a PIN, and you pay. It’s a direct, user-initiated action. Now, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing a framework that could fundamentally change
this interaction. The concept is known as 'agentic payments', where a pre-authorised Artificial Intelligence (AI) agent can execute transactions on your behalf without requiring approval for every single purchase. This move would transition UPI from being a simple payment instruction network to becoming the foundational infrastructure for automated commerce. The framework, reportedly called the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP), is expected to be unveiled soon, potentially positioning India as a global pioneer in this space.
What Could AI-Powered UPI Do?
The initial applications for this new technology are expected to focus on convenience for low-value, frequent purchases. Imagine your AI assistant automatically paying for your weekly grocery delivery or recurring subscriptions without you needing to lift a finger. But the vision extends far beyond that. In the future, an AI agent could be instructed to make more complex, rule-based decisions. For example, it could automatically purchase a product for you when it hits a certain discount threshold or even make pre-approved investments based on specified criteria. This technology is part of a broader push that includes conversational AI, allowing users to initiate payments simply by speaking to their device, a feature the RBI is keen to implement to enhance accessibility.
How Would It Work?
This new system isn't about giving AI unrestricted access to your bank account. Instead, it’s expected to build upon existing UPI features. Two key mechanisms are UPI Circle, which allows a user to delegate payment authority, and Reserve Pay, which lets a user block a certain amount of funds for multiple future payments. Under the proposed UAP, a user would define the rules: setting spending limits, designating specific merchants or categories, and authorising a trusted AI agent to act within those boundaries. For example, you could authorise an AI to spend up to ₹2,000 per month on groceries. The protocol would then handle the verification to ensure the agent is trusted and operating within its approved limits before completing the payment.
The Challenge: Balancing Convenience and Control
While the promise of automated convenience is immense, it also introduces a new frontier of risks and challenges. The primary concern is security. Allowing AI agents to initiate payments creates new potential vulnerabilities that fraudsters could exploit, such as creating fake AI agents or finding ways to execute unauthorised transactions. This shift also raises complex questions about liability. If an AI agent makes an erroneous payment or exceeds its authority, who is responsible—the user, the bank, the merchant, or the AI provider? To address this, the NPCI is reportedly developing a liability framework and incorporating safeguards like strict spending limits, robust identity checks, and comprehensive audit trails for every transaction. Building and maintaining user trust will be the most critical component for the successful adoption of this futuristic payment model.
The Road Ahead
The move toward AI-assisted payments is not happening in a vacuum. Global payment giants like Mastercard and Visa are also developing their own agentic payment capabilities for the Indian market. The NPCI's goal is to create a unified, interoperable national layer that works across all banks and payment apps, rather than a fragmented system. While AI is already being explored by the NPCI to improve fraud detection and streamline compliance processes, the rollout of full-fledged agentic payments represents the next major leap. This technology is no longer a distant sci-fi concept but an active development that could begin reshaping India's world-leading digital payment ecosystem in the near future.
