Lonavala & Khandala: The Classic Monsoon Escape
A perennial favourite for Mumbaikars, the twin hill stations of Lonavala and Khandala are arguably at their most charming during the monsoon. The approximately two-hour drive via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway becomes a scenic journey, with misty hills and lush
greenery accompanying you. Once there, the area is alive with cascading waterfalls and overflowing dams like Bhushi Dam. Viewpoints such as Tiger Point and Lion's Point offer dramatic, cloud-filled vistas of the valleys below. While it can get crowded, a weekday trip reveals a more serene side. Don't forget to indulge in hot corn on the cob and pakoras from roadside stalls, a quintessential Lonavala monsoon experience. For trekkers, forts like Lohagad and Rajmachi offer misty and rewarding trails.
Malshej Ghat: The Waterfall Route
For those who believe the journey is the destination, a road trip to Malshej Ghat is a must. This mountain pass in the Western Ghats is famous for its drive, where numerous waterfalls cascade directly onto the road, creating a thrilling and immersive experience. Located about 130 km from Mumbai, the drive takes you through winding roads enveloped in dense fog and mist. The entire region transforms into a green paradise, making it a dream for photographers and nature lovers. Key attractions include the roaring waterfalls along the highway and viewpoints that offer stunning, though often foggy, panoramas. Migratory flamingos can sometimes be spotted near the Pimpalgaon Joga Dam during this season. Given the heavy mist, it’s a drive that demands caution but delivers unparalleled scenic beauty.
Igatpuri: The Serene Green Retreat
If peace and tranquility are what you seek, Igatpuri is the perfect monsoon destination. Situated on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, this hill station offers a quieter alternative to Lonavala. The landscape turns a vibrant green, with attractions like the Bhatsa River Valley and Camel Valley offering picturesque views of mist-covered mountains and gushing waterfalls. Igatpuri is also a hub for wellness, home to the world's largest Vipassana meditation centre, Dhamma Giri. For adventure enthusiasts, the monsoon season is ideal for trekking to nearby forts like Tringalwadi or even attempting the trek to Kalsubai, Maharashtra's highest peak, which starts from a nearby village. The drive itself, through foggy ghats, sets the tone for a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend.
Bhandardara: The Hidden Gem
A bit further afield at around 165 km from Mumbai, Bhandardara is a relatively untouched and serene destination perfect for a longer weekend. This region is a treasure trove of natural wonders that are amplified during the monsoon. The main attractions include the majestic Randha Falls, the overflowing Wilson Dam, and the tranquil Arthur Lake. When the Wilson Dam overflows, it creates the spectacular, but seasonal, Umbrella Falls. The area is a haven for trekkers, serving as a base for hikes to Ratangad and Harishchandragad forts. The drive to Bhandardara is scenic, taking you through rural landscapes that are a lush, vibrant green during the rains, offering a true escape from the city.
Kolad: For The Adventure Seekers
While most monsoon trips are about serene landscapes, Kolad offers a rush of adrenaline. Located about 120 km from Mumbai, this village on the banks of the Kundalika River is the hub for white-water rafting in Maharashtra. The monsoon is the best season for rafting here, as the water levels are high, making the Grade II and III rapids more exciting. Uniquely, the river's flow is controlled by the Bhira Dam, ensuring rafting can continue year-round but is most thrilling from June to September. Beyond rafting, the lush green surroundings offer opportunities for trekking, rappelling, and riverside camping, making it an action-packed weekend getaway for those looking to do more than just watch the rain.
