Why the Changes This August?
There are two main reasons for the revised train schedules this month. Firstly, Southern Railway is undertaking a massive redevelopment project at Chennai Egmore, one of the region's busiest terminals. To facilitate these crucial engineering works, several
express trains that usually operate from Egmore will be temporarily diverted, short-terminated, or will originate from other nearby stations. Secondly, with the Onam festival approaching, a significant surge in passenger traffic is expected. To accommodate this festive rush, special fare trains are being introduced on high-demand routes, providing much-needed extra capacity for those travelling to their hometowns. Passengers are strongly advised to verify their train's schedule and boarding station before starting their journey.
Chennai Egmore Redevelopment: Key Service Changes
The redevelopment work at Chennai Egmore station will affect train patterns from August 5 to August 20, 2026. Several key services will not start from or end at Chennai Egmore during this period. Instead, they will originate from or terminate at Tambaram and Mambalam stations. For passengers whose journeys are impacted, this means your boarding point or final destination within Chennai has changed. The affected trains that will now terminate at Tambaram include services from Thanjavur (Train No. 16866), Kollam (Train No. 20636), Salem (Train No. 22154), and Mangaluru Central (Train No. 16160). The Tiruchchirappalli-Chennai Egmore Rockfort Express (Train No. 12654) will terminate at Mambalam. Correspondingly, the return services for these trains will originate from Tambaram or Mambalam. For instance, the Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur Uzhavan Express (Train No. 16865) will depart from Tambaram at 11:00 PM. Travellers must check official railway channels like the NTES app for real-time updates.
Onam Festival Special Trains
To handle the Onam festival rush, Southern Railway is running special services connecting major cities in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka between July and September 2026. One of the key routes is the Mangaluru Central-Chennai Egmore Weekly Special (Train No. 06126), which will depart from Mangaluru Central at 4:00 PM on Mondays throughout August (specifically August 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31). Another important service is the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Tambaram special, which will operate four services each way during August and September to connect the capitals of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. These trains provide vital connectivity for people travelling home for the festival. Bookings for these special services have already opened, and with high demand expected, passengers are encouraged to book their tickets well in advance.
Diversions and Other Special Services
Beyond the changes at Egmore and the Onam specials, other services are also affected. The Ahmedabad–Tiruchchirappalli Weekly Express Special (Train No. 09419) scheduled for August 6 and 13 will be diverted via Renigunta and Tiruttani, skipping its usual stops at Arakkonam, Perambur, Chennai Egmore, and Tambaram. An additional stop has been provided at Tiruttani. Central Railway has also announced special trains for the Velankanni Festival, with services from Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak Terminus running through Tamil Nadu with halts at key stations like Katpadi, Tiruvannamalai, and Villupuram in late August and early September. These services, like Train No. 01161, provide crucial connectivity for pilgrims.

Given the number of changes, double-checking your journey details is essential. The best way to get real-time information is through the official Indian Railways website or the NTES (National Train Enquiry System) app. Tickets for all special trains can be booked via the IRCTC website and mobile app. It's important to note that for many 'Special Fare' trains, the ticket prices might be higher than usual, operating on a dynamic fare system similar to airlines. Booking early is the best way to secure a confirmed seat at a reasonable price. With ticket counters at stations often being crowded, online booking is the most convenient method. Remember to have your account details ready and check for ticket availability before finalising your travel plans.
