Monsoon Arrives, Alerts Issued
After a delay of nearly two weeks, the Southwest Monsoon made its entry into Uttar Pradesh on June 30th, advancing from Bihar through the Purvanchal region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that conditions are favourable for the monsoon
to cover the entire state within the next few days. In response to the weather shift, the IMD has issued heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, and strong wind warnings across the state. An orange alert, indicating a need to be prepared, has been issued for several districts, while a yellow alert, suggesting a need to be aware, is in place for dozens more. These alerts signify the potential for intense spells of rain that can impact daily life and travel plans.
Districts Under Heavy Rain Warning
Travellers should pay close attention to district-specific warnings. The IMD has highlighted several areas where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected. An orange alert has been specifically issued for districts including Bahraich, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Kushinagar, Ballia, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Lalitpur. A wider yellow alert covers around 50 districts, including major urban and pilgrimage centres like Lucknow, Kanpur, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, as well as parts of Western UP such as Noida, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. The warnings also include threats of thunderstorms and gusty winds, with speeds potentially reaching 40-50 kmph.
Potential for Travel Disruptions
The primary concern for those travelling within or to Uttar Pradesh is the high likelihood of disruptions. Heavy downpours can lead to significant waterlogging on city streets and national highways, slowing down traffic considerably. This is a particular concern in urban centres like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Varanasi. Beyond road travel, train services and flights may also face delays or cancellations due to the adverse weather. The combination of rain and strong winds can create hazardous driving conditions and may lead to temporary road closures. Travellers are advised to build extra time into their journeys and verify their route and mode of transport ahead of departure.
How to Stay Informed and Safe
Staying updated with the latest weather information is crucial for ensuring safety. The IMD provides regular, real-time updates through its official website (mausam.imd.gov.in) and mobile apps. Local news channels and official government social media handles are also reliable sources for district-level warnings and traffic advisories. Authorities advise travellers to avoid unnecessary journeys during periods of heavy rain and to be particularly cautious of lightning during thunderstorms by staying away from open fields and trees. Before heading out, check the status of your route and destination. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, and always carry an emergency kit with essentials like a first-aid box, torch, and power bank for your phone.
