A Welcome Relief for Festive Travel
Indian Railways has announced it will operate over 400 special train services to manage the immense passenger rush expected for the upcoming Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri and the Onam festival in Kerala. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that
more than 300 special trains are planned for the Rath Yatra, which begins on July 16, and over 100 specials will be run for Onam celebrations next month. This is a significant move to ease the travel burden for thousands of devotees and families looking to travel to their hometowns. These festival specials are in addition to the regular services and are specifically designed to handle the seasonal surge in demand, a recurring challenge for the national transporter.
Spotlight on Rath Yatra and Onam Routes
The bulk of the new services are concentrated on routes leading to Puri in Odisha and various destinations across Kerala. For the Rath Yatra, the special trains will supplement the 800 regular trains already serving the region, connecting Puri with key locations across the country. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) is also augmenting existing trains with extra coaches. For instance, several trains like the Bhubaneswar-KSR Bengaluru Prashanti Express and the Bhubaneswar–Tirupati Express will have additional AC coaches throughout July. Similarly, for Onam, more than 100 trains will facilitate travel for people heading to Kerala. While the full list is awaited, initial services have been announced connecting Bengaluru with Kerala, though passenger demand remains high for connections from other major cities like Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi.
Beyond Festivals: Summer and Monsoon Specials
The recent announcements are part of a broader strategy by Indian Railways to manage seasonal demand. The summer season, which concluded on June 30, saw a record 15,000 special train services operating. Many of these summer special extensions are continuing into July and beyond. For example, weekly special services connecting Shalimar to Charlapalli and Patna to Khurda Road have been extended until the end of July. Furthermore, special trains on long-distance routes like Kanpur-Bengaluru and Prayagraj-Hubballi are now scheduled to run until late September, providing sustained relief on high-demand corridors. Travellers on the Konkan route should also be aware of the monsoon timetable, effective from mid-June to October, which adjusts train speeds and schedules for safety during the rainy season.
How to Book Your Ticket
Booking a seat on these special trains follows the same procedure as regular services, and it's best done online to avoid queues and last-minute hassles. The primary platform is the official Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website or its mobile app, IRCTC Rail Connect. To book, you need to create an IRCTC account if you don't already have one. Once logged in, you can search for trains by entering your source and destination stations and the date of your journey. The system will show all available trains, including the specials. You can then check for seat availability, view fares, and proceed to book by providing passenger details. Payment can be made through various online methods, including credit/debit cards, net banking, and mobile wallets. It is advisable to book as early as possible, as seats on these high-demand routes fill up quickly, even with the additional services.
