What is Food Safety Connect?
Food Safety Connect is an initiative by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) designed to create a direct link between consumers and the food safety ecosystem. It is available as both a user-friendly mobile app for Android and iOS,
and a web portal. The platform's primary goal is to empower you, the consumer. It allows you to check the authenticity of an FBO's (Food Business Operator's) licence, lodge complaints about food quality or hygiene, and access a wealth of information about safe eating practices. Think of it as a digital watchdog in your pocket, helping to build a more transparent and accountable food market.
Why It Matters More Than Ever
The push for consumer involvement isn't happening in a vacuum. In recent weeks, FSSAI has intensified its enforcement actions, issuing notices to major companies and quick-commerce platforms like Swiggy Instamart over allegations of misleading labels and selling unsafe or expired products. There has also been a crackdown on unhygienic conditions, with spice factories being shut down and iconic eateries facing licence suspensions. FSSAI's recent social media campaigns, like 'Be the Eyes of Food Safety,' explicitly ask consumers to report violations they see. This renewed focus comes as Indians become more concerned about food quality and as the packaged food sector continues to boom, making vigilant, empowered consumers essential for public health.
How to Check a Food Business Licence
Verifying a restaurant or food brand’s legitimacy is simple. On the Food Safety Connect app or portal, you can find a feature to check an FSSAI licence or registration number. Many establishments are now required to display this number, often with a QR code, at their premises. You can either enter the number manually or scan the QR code. This quick check confirms that the business is registered with the authorities and is, in principle, accountable to food safety standards. This simple act of verification before you buy or dine empowers you to make informed choices and support businesses that comply with regulations.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Reporting a Violation
Spotted something concerning? Reporting it is straightforward. First, download the 'Food Safety Connect' app or visit the consumer grievance portal. After logging in, select the option to register a new complaint. You will be prompted to provide details about the food business, the nature of the complaint (e.g., adulteration, poor hygiene, expired product, misleading label), and a description of the issue. The most powerful feature is the ability to upload evidence. Attaching a photo of the unhygienic kitchen, the expired product's label, or the questionable food item can significantly strengthen your complaint and help authorities act faster. Once submitted, you'll receive a unique tracking ID to monitor the status of your complaint.
What Happens After You File a Complaint?
Your complaint doesn't disappear into a void. It is automatically routed to the relevant authorities, which could be the nodal officer of the food company itself for an initial resolution, or the State Food Safety Commissioner. The system is designed for transparency, allowing you to track the progress using your complaint ID. If a complaint is forwarded to a food business, they are expected to report their corrective action back to FSSAI. If the response is unsatisfactory or no action is taken within a certain timeframe, the complaint can be escalated to state authorities for further investigation and potential enforcement action. The platform even allows you to provide feedback on the resolution, closing the loop and contributing to a more responsive system.
