The Comforting Brew We All Need
Known by many names across India—kashayam in the south, decoction in English—kadha is a traditional Ayurvedic drink that has been a staple in Indian households for generations. It’s essentially a potent tea made by simmering a variety of herbs and spices
in water to extract their beneficial properties. During the monsoon, when the weather change brings a spike in colds, coughs, and flu, kadha becomes more than just a beverage; it’s a preventative ritual, a gentle home remedy, and a warm hug in a mug. It’s the first thing our grandmothers would brew at the hint of a sniffle, and its earthy, pungent aroma is synonymous with care and well-being.

- **Ginger (Adrak):** Known for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, ginger is a classic remedy for sore throats and congestion. Its warming nature helps soothe the respiratory system.
- **Tulsi (Holy Basil):** Revered in Ayurveda, tulsi is an adaptogen that helps the body combat stress. It's packed with antimicrobial properties, making it a powerful ally against seasonal infections.
- **Black Peppercorns (Kali Mirch):** This humble spice does more than add heat. It contains piperine, a compound that enhances the absorption of other nutrients (like curcumin from turmeric) and has its own antibacterial properties.
- **Cloves (Laung):** Rich in antioxidants and known for their antiseptic qualities, cloves can help relieve throat irritation and coughs.
- **Cinnamon (Dalchini):** Beyond its sweet, woody flavour, cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants and is believed to have anti-inflammatory benefits that support overall immune function.
How to Brew Your Perfect Monsoon Kadha
Making kadha is a simple, intuitive process. Think of this as a base recipe that you can and should adjust to your own taste.
**Ingredients:**
- 2 cups of water
- 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated or crushed
- 4-5 fresh tulsi leaves
- 4-5 black peppercorns, lightly crushed
- 2 cloves, lightly crushed
- 1 small stick of cinnamon
- A pinch of turmeric (haldi) (optional)
- Jaggery (gur) or honey to taste (add honey after cooling slightly)
**Instructions:**
1. **Combine and Boil:** In a small saucepan, add the water, grated ginger, tulsi leaves, crushed peppercorns, cloves, and cinnamon stick.
2. **Simmer Well:** Bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Then, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. The goal is to let the water reduce to about half its original quantity, concentrating all the spiced goodness.
3. **Strain and Serve:** Turn off the heat. Strain the liquid into a cup. If you’re using jaggery, you can add it while simmering. If using honey, wait for the kadha to cool down to a drinkable temperature, as boiling honey can alter its properties.
4. **Enjoy:** Sip slowly while it’s still warm. For best results, have a cup once or twice a day during the monsoon season.
Customise Your Cup
The beauty of kadha is its versatility. Feel free to experiment based on what you have and what your body needs. You can add a few carom seeds (ajwain) for digestive issues, a pod of green cardamom (elaichi) for flavour and its decongestant properties, or a squeeze of lemon juice at the end for a dose of Vitamin C. Some people also add lemongrass for a refreshing citrusy note. Listen to your body and create a blend that feels right for you. The key is the slow simmering process that allows the ingredients to infuse the water completely.
