A Lifeline During the Festive Rush
Every year, the months of October and November witness a massive surge in travel across India as people head home to celebrate festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja with their families. This results in an overwhelming demand for train tickets,
with services running packed and waitlists extending into the hundreds. To combat this predictable congestion, Central Railway has rolled out a plan to operate 418 special train services. This move is designed to increase passenger capacity and ensure that more people can secure a confirmed seat for their journey during this peak travel period.
Connecting Mumbai to Key Destinations
These special services will originate from major Mumbai terminals like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), as well as from nearby hubs like Pune and Hadapsar. The trains will connect Mumbai to a wide array of destinations across the country, with a significant focus on high-demand routes. Major beneficiaries will be passengers travelling to cities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, such as Gorakhpur, Banaras, and Mau, which see a heavy influx of travellers for Diwali and Chhath Puja. Additionally, there is enhanced connectivity to the south, with special services planned for Chennai, Bengaluru, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Highlights of the Special Services
The 418 services are a mix of daily, weekly, and bi-weekly trains scheduled between October and November 2026 to cover the entire festival window. Some of the key routes announced include: 64 daily services between CSMT and Gorakhpur. Weekly AC special trains from CSMT to Chennai and Bengaluru. Bi-weekly services from LTT to Mau and Banaras. Daily services from Hadapsar to Gorakhpur. Additional connections from Mumbai to Nagpur, Kolhapur, and Latur, as well as from LTT to Madgaon for those heading to Goa. These services cater to a variety of needs, with a mix of AC, sleeper, and unreserved coaches available on different routes.
How to Book Your Tickets
Booking for these special trains, identified by their 0-starting train numbers, is set to open in phases starting September 27, 2026. Passengers are advised to book their tickets as soon as reservations open, as demand is expected to be extremely high. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app, and at all computerised railway reservation centres. It is important to note that these trains often run with special fares, which may be slightly higher than regular services to manage the operational costs of these additional trips.
Tips for a Smoother Festival Journey
Securing a ticket is only half the battle; navigating the festive rush requires some planning. Book your tickets the moment reservations open, as they fill up within hours on popular routes. Be flexible with your travel dates by a day or two if possible, as trains on weekdays or at odd hours might have better availability. Before heading to the station, always check the real-time status of your train and any potential delays using the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) portal. To avoid last-minute hassles, travel with a valid ticket and arrive at the station well in advance. Travelling light can also make navigating crowded platforms much easier.
