At the recent Google I/O Connect event in Bengaluru, Google DeepMind announced it is bringing its AI Research Foundations curriculum to India. This is a free, 56-hour online programme designed to give learners the skills to build, train, and fine-tune
modern large language models (LLMs), the technology behind generative AI like Gemini. To ensure the programme reaches a wide audience, Google is partnering with premier institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and industry body NASSCOM. IISc has already started integrating the curriculum into its learning programmes, signalling a major step towards making world-class AI education accessible.
What the Programme Actually Offers
This isn't just a brief introduction to AI. The 56-hour curriculum provides hands-on instruction in the complex mechanics of language models. Participants will delve into neural network design, language data representation, and the process of training smaller language models from scratch. The goal is to move beyond simply using AI tools to understanding how they are built. Upon completion, learners can earn valuable, industry-recognised Google Cloud Skill badges and certificates, which can be a significant addition to a resume.
Who Is It For?
The programme is primarily aimed at university students and community learners who already have a technical foundation. A working knowledge of Python and a background in computer science, mathematics, or other technical subjects are recommended. It is designed to create a pipeline of highly skilled AI developers and researchers, rather than being an introductory course for complete beginners. The collaboration with IISc and NASSCOM will help scale this curriculum through various educational institutions across the country, making it available via platforms like Google Skills and NASSCOM's FutureSkills Prime.
