The New Family Travel Checklist
Anyone who has travelled with children knows the unique challenges it presents. Long queues, unexpected delays, and the constant refrain of "I'm bored" can fray the nerves of even the most patient parent. This shared experience is driving a shift in how
families plan their trips. Instead of simply booking the most affordable ticket, parents are now scrutinising airports themselves. They're asking new questions: Does the airport have a play area? Are there clean and private nursing rooms? How easy is it to navigate with a stroller? A good airport experience is no longer a bonus; it's a prerequisite for a successful family trip.
Must-Have: Play Areas and Entertainment
A game-changer for any parent is a dedicated space where children can safely burn off excess energy before a long flight. Airports are responding to this need. Leading airports now feature colourful, engaging play areas with soft flooring, slides, and interactive games. These zones provide a welcome distraction during layovers and help children associate travel with fun rather than boredom. Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), for instance, has been recognised for its focus on creating an engaging travel environment. Similarly, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) has colourful play zones in its terminals to help kids unwind.
Practical Comforts: Nursing and Changing Rooms
Beyond entertainment, practical facilities are a top priority. Clean, private, and well-equipped baby care rooms are non-negotiable for parents with infants. These rooms, which offer changing tables, comfortable seating for feeding, and access to hot water, provide a quiet sanctuary away from the terminal's hustle and bustle. Major Indian airports like Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad now provide these facilities across their terminals. Delhi Airport's 'Family@DEL' initiative, launched in early 2026, even includes specially trained 'Family Assistance Buddies' to help parents navigate the airport. Complimentary strollers, available at airports like Delhi and Mumbai, also make a huge difference, freeing up parents' hands and making it easier to get to the gate.
Indian Airports Stepping Up
Indian airports are increasingly being recognised on the global stage for their family-friendly approach. In a 2026 study by a UK-based travel provider, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport was ranked the world's third most family-friendly airport, while Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport came in fourth. These airports were lauded for amenities like play areas, family lounges, baby care facilities, and overall passenger experience. Delhi's IGI Airport has also earned praise for its comprehensive family services, which include dedicated check-in counters, priority security lanes, and even kid-friendly meal options in food courts. These initiatives show a clear understanding that a happy child often means a happy, and repeat, customer.
Making Any Airport Journey Smoother
Even if you aren't flying through a top-ranked family airport, a little preparation can go a long way. Pack a 'go-bag' with new, small toys, favourite snacks, and fully charged electronics to combat boredom. Check the airport's website in advance to locate any play areas or family facilities that do exist. Many airlines offer priority boarding for families with young children, giving you extra time to get settled on the plane without feeling rushed. Finally, for very young children, having a copy of your contact information tucked into their pocket can provide peace of mind in the unlikely event you get separated in a crowd.
