The landscape of online shopping in India is set for a major overhaul. New government regulations, taking effect from January 1, 2027, are designed to make your digital shopping experience fairer, safer, and much more transparent.
An End to Misleading Discounts
Have you ever wondered
if that '70% off' deal is genuine? The new rules aim to end pricing ambiguity. When an e-commerce platform displays a discount, it must now also show the 'prior price'. This is defined as the lowest price the item was sold at in the 30 days before the discount was announced. This change provides a clear, honest benchmark, allowing you to accurately judge the value of a sale and avoid deals that rely on inflated original prices.
Clearer and Fairer Search Results
The days of scrolling past irrelevant or sponsored products that dominate your search results are numbered. The regulations explicitly prohibit e-commerce platforms from manipulating search rankings in a way that misleads you or reduces the relevance of the results. Furthermore, any 'sponsored listing' or advertisement must be clearly and prominently identified, making it easier for you to distinguish between organic results and paid placements.
Crackdown on Deceptive 'Dark Patterns'
The new rules reinforce the 2023 guidelines against 'dark patterns'—deceptive design tricks that nudge you into making unintended purchases or choices. This includes practices like sneaking items into your cart, making it difficult to cancel a subscription, or creating a false sense of urgency. Platforms will be required to conduct annual self-audits and display a compliance certificate, ensuring they actively work to provide a straightforward user experience.
More Power Over Your Personal Data
Your data is your own, and the revised governance strengthens this principle. Marketplace platforms will be forbidden from using your personal information for specific purposes without your 'express and affirmative consent'. This means they cannot, for example, share your shopping history with third parties or use it for their own benefit without you actively agreeing to it, giving you greater control over your privacy.
Stronger Grievance Redressal
Getting help when something goes wrong is about to become easier. E_commerce platforms are now required to integrate with the National Consumer Helpline (NCH), creating a more unified system for complaints. When you file a grievance, the platform's officer must provide you with a copy of the complaint and resolve it within one month. With e_commerce accounting for nearly 29% of all grievances filed with the NCH in 2025, this move aims to create a more accountable and responsive system.
Greater Seller and Product Transparency
Making an informed decision requires having all the facts. The rules mandate that platforms must provide comprehensive details for products, including return and refund policies, warranty information, and best–before or use–before dates. For imported goods, the country of origin and details of the importer must be clearly displayed. Invoices must also feature the seller's name as prominently as the marketplace's own name, clarifying who you are actually buying from.
