Together, they create beverages that energize, hydrate, and soothe your system, making them a perfect addition to your daily routine.
Recipe 1: Zesty Mint Jeera Cooler
Known as Jaljeera in many parts of India, this cooler is a tangy, spicy, and deeply refreshing drink. It's an excellent appetizer and digestive aid. The combination of roasted cumin and fresh mint creates a flavour profile that is uniquely invigorating. Ingredients: - 1 cup fresh mint leaves - 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves (optional, for added freshness) - 2 teaspoons cumin seeds - 1-inch piece of ginger, roughly chopped - Juice of 2 large lemons - 1 teaspoon black salt (kala namak) - 1/2 teaspoon dried mango powder (amchur) - Sugar or jaggery to taste - 4-5 cups of chilled water - Boondi for garnish (optional) Method: 1. Dry roast the cumin seeds in a small pan over low heat until they become fragrant. Be careful not to burn them. Let them cool completely. 2. Grind the roasted cumin seeds into a coarse powder. You can use a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder. 3. In a blender, combine the mint leaves, coriander leaves, ginger, and lemon juice. Add a little water to help it blend into a smooth paste. 4. In a large jug, pour the chilled water. Add the mint-coriander paste, roasted cumin powder, black salt, and dried mango powder. Stir everything together until well combined. 5. Add sugar or jaggery to your desired level of sweetness and stir until it dissolves. 6. For the best flavour, let the cooler sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. 7. To serve, pour into tall glasses. You can strain the mixture if you prefer a smoother drink. Garnish with a few boondi on top for a traditional touch.
Recipe 2: Tangy Kokum Cooler
Kokum sherbet is a beloved drink, especially in the coastal regions of Maharashtra and Goa. It has a unique sweet and sour taste and a beautiful deep red colour. It’s known for its cooling properties and is a fantastic remedy for acidity. Ingredients: - 12-15 pieces of dried kokum - 1/2 cup jaggery or sugar - 1 teaspoon roasted cumin powder - 1/2 teaspoon black salt - A pinch of black pepper powder (optional) - Chilled water or soda water Method: 1. Begin by making a kokum concentrate. Soak the dried kokum pieces in about 1 cup of warm water for at least 2-3 hours, or overnight. The kokum will soften and release its deep colour and flavour into the water. 2. Transfer the soaked kokum and water to a pan. Add the jaggery (or sugar), roasted cumin powder, black salt, and pepper powder. 3. Heat the mixture on a medium flame, stirring until the jaggery completely dissolves. 4. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly into a syrup. 5. Turn off the heat and let the concentrate cool down completely. 6. Once cooled, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing the kokum pieces to extract all the liquid. Discard the pulp. 7. To serve, add 2-3 tablespoons of this kokum concentrate to a glass filled with ice. Top it up with chilled water or soda water and stir well. Your refreshing kokum cooler is ready to be enjoyed.
