A Record-Extending Achievement
Indian captain Shubman Gill has officially been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September 2026, marking a historic fifth win of the prestigious award. This latest accolade extends his record as the man with the most monthly honours from cricket's
governing body, pulling him clear of other multiple winners like Babar Azam. The decision places him in elite company, beating out strong competition from teammate and explosive opener Abhishek Sharma, as well as Zimbabwe’s consistent all-rounder Sikandar Raza, who were also shortlisted for their stellar performances during the month. Upon receiving the honour, Gill expressed his gratitude, stating, 'It feels fantastic to win my fifth ICC Player of the Month award, and I am grateful to the panel for this honour'. This win not only highlights his incredible peak form but also a remarkable consistency at the highest level of the game.
The Batting Masterclass That Sealed the Deal
Gill’s award-winning month was defined by a truly monumental run of form in the ODI series against the West Indies. He amassed an incredible 333 runs in just two matches. The campaign began with a commanding 110 off 108 balls in Thiruvananthapuram, an innings that anchored a successful run chase. However, it was his performance three days later in Guwahati that will be remembered for years to come. In response to a mammoth West Indian total of 405, Gill, captaining the side, played an innings of a lifetime. He smashed an unbeaten 223 from a mere 133 balls, an knock studded with 26 fours and eight sixes. In the process, he registered the fastest double-century in ODI history, reaching the 200-run mark in just 117 balls. It also stands as the highest-ever individual score in a successful ODI run chase, powering India to a stunning victory with 39 balls to spare.
Fierce Competition from a Teammate
While Gill’s ODI heroics were undeniable, the fact he 'pipped' Abhishek Sharma speaks volumes about the latter's own breathtaking month. Sharma earned his nomination on the back of a scintillating T20I series against Afghanistan, where he redefined explosive batting. The left-hander blasted 229 runs in the series, including a historic century off just 30 balls in the third T20I — the fastest ever by a player from a Full Member nation. His assault included an innings of 82 from 32 balls earlier in the series. The friendly rivalry between the two Indian stars, both nominated for their incredible but different white-ball exploits, showcases the phenomenal depth of talent in Indian cricket at the moment. While Gill took home the award, Sharma’s nomination was a clear recognition of a player hitting a new level of international stardom.
The Path to Five: A Story of Consistency
This fifth award is not an isolated event but the latest peak in a sustained period of excellence for Gill. His previous wins came in January 2023, September 2023, February 2025, and July 2025. This collection of awards, spread across different years and against different opponents, paints a clear picture of a player who has become the backbone of India's batting lineup. It demonstrates an ability to not only produce moments of individual brilliance but to do so with a regularity that few in the modern game can match. Each award has been a marker of a specific, dominant period of play, from his breakout double-century in 2023 to his latest history-making innings. This pattern of converting purple patches into tangible, record-setting achievements is what separates the good from the great.
