Leaving the Apollo Hop Behind
The spacesuits of the Apollo missions were groundbreaking for their time, but they were also incredibly restrictive. Pressurised and bulky, they made it difficult for astronauts to bend, kneel, or even walk with a natural gait. This limited their ability
to perform complex scientific tasks, such as collecting geological samples from the ground. For the Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon, simply planting a flag isn't enough. Astronauts will need to be geologists, mechanics, and builders, requiring a suit that works with them, not against them. That's where the next-generation Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU, comes in.
A New Commercial Approach
Unlike the in-house development of past eras, NASA has turned to a commercial partner, Axiom Space, to build the suits for the Artemis III mission and beyond. This partnership is part of a broader agency strategy to foster a commercial space economy. Axiom Space, in a notable collaboration, has even worked with Italian fashion house Prada to leverage its expertise in materials and manufacturing for the suit's outer layers. The contract, valued at over $228 million, tasks Axiom with designing, certifying, and producing the suits that will enable the first woman and next man to walk on the lunar surface since 1972.
Engineered for Natural Movement
The key upgrade in the AxEMU is its remarkable flexibility. The suit incorporates highly articulated joints and bearing systems at the waist, hips, and legs. This design finally allows astronauts to bend, kneel, and twist their torso in a way that was impossible during the Apollo missions. The stiff-legged waddle has been engineered out, replaced by a more natural walking motion. This enhanced mobility is critical for allowing astronauts to pick up rocks, set up equipment, and navigate the uneven terrain expected at the lunar south pole without fighting against their own suit. Furthermore, the modular design can be adjusted to fit a wide range of body types, accommodating at least 90 percent of the U.S. male and female populations.
Ready for the Rugged South Pole
The destination for the Artemis III mission is the Moon's south pole, a region of stark contrasts with deep, permanently shadowed craters and areas of near-constant sunlight. This environment is scientifically compelling but also presents extreme challenges, including temperatures that can plummet to below -200 degrees Celsius. The AxEMU is built to withstand these harsh conditions. It also features crucial built-in technology for this environment, including integrated HD cameras and advanced lighting systems, as astronauts will need to see clearly inside craters where sunlight has not reached for billions of years. The suit's design also provides enhanced protection against abrasive lunar dust, a major problem that plagued the Apollo missions.
